Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One and Game Pass players have been enjoying searching the No Man’s Sky universe for their one-of-a-kind Sentinel starship ever since we launched the free Interceptor update just a few weeks ago. And before that the Fractal update brought the Wonders Catalogue and much much more.

Today we’re peeling back the curtain on more of the mystery started in the Interceptor update in our latest expedition – Singularity. It is chapter two of a four-part narrative that will play out throughout the year.

Like all No Man’s Sky expeditions, Singularity draws Travellers together from all systems to a specific starting point in the universe, this time to investigate the curious robot heads that were bamboozling those who came across them in Interceptor with cryptic binary messages. We want to keep the mystery, but this is a story about AI corruption, robotic uprisings and strong hints of what’s to come in No Man’s Sky.

Throughout the five week long expedition, the whole community will be working with Nada and Polo on the space anomaly can try to breathe new life into the galaxy, and work together for some exciting rewards. Ultimately, it will be up to the community as a whole to make a major choice in the end result which may have wide-reaching effects on what’s to come…

At Xbox, we have the fundamental commitment to provide all players with a safe and secure experience on our platform – and this is especially true for our youngest players. We frequently iterate on our safety measures, in collaboration and with feedback from the community, regulators and partners. We recently entered into a settlement with the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to update our account creation process and resolve a data retention glitch found in our system. Regrettably, we did not meet customer expectations and are committed to complying with the order to continue improving upon our safety measures. We believe that we can and should do more, and we’ll remain steadfast in our commitment to safety, privacy, and security for our community.

Our two decades of safety experience has taught us that all players want, and need, safety and privacy protections. Since 2005, when we launched the first console that could connect players online, we’ve continued to invest in tools and technologies to protect our community. That work evolved into a multifaceted safety strategy. Our suite of safety, privacy and security measures are designed to respect player privacy and safety, and empower players, as well as parents and caregivers, to have control over their gaming experiences.

Below we detail the changes we made to verify child accounts, however, our work on age validation doesn’t stop there. We see an opportunity to further advance safe digital experiences that are accessible, simple to use, and benefit all players. We are innovating on next-generation identity and age validation – a convenient, secure, one-time process for all players that will allow us to better deliver customized, safe, age-appropriate experiences. The long-term benefits will be felt by all players, especially children and their families. And while we see this as the future, we anticipate that the entire games industry will as well.

Over the coming months, we will test new methods to validate age and take feedback from our customers’ experience. The learnings from these trials will directly inform advancements in our player identity systems. We are incorporating Microsoft’s insights from across industries to develop a principled approach to secure digital identities that minimizes data collection, prioritizes security, and makes it easier for players to understand how their data is used.

We’ll continue to put players at the center – giving them full control over their online experiences and digital identities. We’ll continue to empower parents and caregivers to exercise appropriate oversight of the gaming experience for their children and families, in addition to tools like the Xbox Family Settings App and child accounts. Child accounts are built for underage players so that parents and caregivers can manage settings, privacy, spending and more. We will continue to be transparent and clear about the actions we take on our service, just as we did when we released our inaugural Transparency Report and second Transparency Report in May.

The Xbox community is our community – one we shape together. As we innovate and trial new experiences, we’ll work with the community to gather feedback so we can create a safer gaming experience together.

What the FTC settlement means for players

Since the FTC settlement, we have updated our account creation process, which now requires players to first identify date-of-birth and, if under 13 years old, obtain verified parental consent before providing us with any information such as phone number or email address. This updated process ensures that we can identify potential child accounts immediately and make clear to parents and caregivers the next steps to protect their children’s data and play safely on our network.

Over the coming months, players who are under the age of 13 and created an account prior to May 2021 will require parental reconsent – meaning a parent will be prompted to reverify the account and grant permission for their child to continue gameplay and activity on Xbox. We are committed to making this process as seamless as possible. We are working hard to ensure that when parents are prompted to reconsent, they will have the information needed to proceed without disruptions to their child’s access. During the investigation, we identified a technical glitch where our systems did not delete account creation data for child accounts where the account creation process was started but not completed.  This was inconsistent with our policy to save that information for only 14 days to make it easier for gamers to pick up where they left off to complete the process. Our engineering team took immediate action: we fixed the glitch, deleted the data, and implemented practices to prevent the error from recurring. The data was never used, shared, or monetized.

To more clearly explain what information we collect and how we use it, we updated our Microsoft Privacy Statement, including a dedicated section about how Xbox processes user data. We have also updated our home screen to have a clearly labelled link to the Microsoft Privacy Statement. This link also appears in each area of the service where personal information is collected. Microsoft also provides a privacy dashboard that shares with families what data is collected and used. Players can adjust their privacy settings at any time and child accounts are set to the strongest privacy settings by default. To learn more about Xbox’s privacy features, please visit here.

Additional resources for families

We want all parents, caregivers, and families to know that, more than anything else, we have their children’s safety and privacy top of mind. We will continue to communicate the changes we are making to our practices and the data we collect so we can better protect children using our platform. We also continue to explore creative ways to educate players about online safety.

This past Safer Internet Day, we released Minecraft’s Privacy Prodigy, aimed at teaching young people about privacy and how to safeguard their sensitive personal information. This world is the second chapter in the CyberSafe series, following last year’s release of Minecraft CyberSafe: Home Sweet Hmm, reaching millions of players, with unprecedented downloads of support materials underscoring the demand by teachers and families to teach these critical skills and integrate safer online practices daily. CyberSafe: Home Sweet Hmm and CyberSafe: Privacy Prodigy are both available for free on Minecraft: Education Edition and Minecraft Bedrock.

Our updated Xbox Family Hub shares information about creating a family group, managing child accounts, and helps parents and caregivers understand the safety measures we have in place, such as the Xbox Family Settings App.

It’s less than a week until Xbox Games Showcase and Starfield Direct. On Sunday, June 11, our huge double feature will fill you in on upcoming games from Xbox Game Studios and our incredible partners around the world, and offer a deep-dive into Bethesda Game Studios’ highly anticipated Starfield.

There’s nothing quite like watching our Summer showcases live so, with that in mind, here are all the details you need to join us in celebrating the future of gaming.

What time does Xbox Games Showcase begin? Sunday, June 11, at 10am Pacific time / 1pm Eastern time / 6pm UK time.

I first heard about the “The Expanse” novels when the series was described to me as “Game of Thrones in space.” That seemed appropriate as the co-writing collaborators – known singly as James S.A. Corey – were an understudy of George R.R. Martin some years ago, so broad epics spanning numerous novels seemed like an apt description.

Now with nine full-length novels and multiple short stories – many I’ve enjoyed quite thoroughly — and an incredibly entertaining television show that just wrapped up a year ago, it feels time for the world of The Expanse to… well… expand into next-gen gaming with The Expanse: A Telltale Series. The team at Deck Nine Games seem to be the perfectly suited to deliver on that experience.

The writers [Ty and Daniel] encouraged us to explore creating new characters and adding to the lore.

“The Expanse has a massive universe with wildly varied settings, characters, and stories,” explains Deck Nine Games Director Stephan Frost. “The writers [Ty and Daniel] encouraged us to explore creating new characters and adding to the lore. There’s a section in the game where we explore what life was like for first-generation belters that we’re very excited for players to see, and that was a lot of fun to explore and create. We have characters fans will recognize and we have some new ones that players are going to love meeting when they play the game.”

When Deck Nine initially pitched the game, Ty and Daniel liked the idea and added a few suggestions for these characters and plot points. As development continued, they would receive notes from the authors and the show’s production company, Alcon, regarding world building to make sure it all felt and looked like “The Expanse” as seen in the television series. Looking at some of the existing footage it’s clear Deck Nine Games is on the right path and have captured  the hit sci-fi show — having access to its “art bible” helped.

“We are huge nerds for The Expanse, so really this was a passion project for a group of talented game developers to play in a universe we love,” Frost says. “Our cinematics team really studied the cinematography of the show, and the goal was to make it feel like a playable episode [of the show]. We can’t wait for Expanse fans to see what we’ve cooked up.”

The adventure game formula that Telltale Games has established over the years has gone through many iterations, but the core of delivering an interactive adventure game has been at the heart of every release. Part of that formula has been player choice and Frost wasn’t shy in sharing that we’ll have some tough choices in store — the selections we make will affect the last episode of the game — who lives, who dies, and various crew actions will be affected by the decisions made from all the previous episodes. Helping to land that emotional connection to those repercussions will be some very expressive and well animated characters to help reinforce that feeling of playing in world of The Expanse.

“We are using motion capture technology that allows for some extremely nuanced performances thanks to our actors and animators, and these performances really help tell a story with heart and emotion,” explains Frost. “We’ve also added a zero-G exploration mechanic, with a much larger space to explore derelict ships while talking to members of our crew abord the Artemis. As an interactive storytelling device, it’s fun to float upside down and attach to hull walls with our magboots and get perspectives from the crew on what we’re seeing.”

Development on The Expanse: A Telltale Series started a little less than two years ago and Frost mentions that once the game was greenlit, the team wanted to really lean into what was exciting about the universe. Coming out of that planning session, everyone seemed to land on the character of Camina Drummer as one of the team’s favorites. Relative to the other main characters of the show, her backstory wasn’t nearly as fleshed out like that of the crew of the Rocinante as seen in “The Expanse.”

“We loved the idea of exploring her past to find out why she became so awesome in the show,” says Frost. “The Belt and zero gravity were more awesome parts [of the show], so we knew we had to have gameplay that felt like it was leaning into that part of the universe. When we put all that together, we needed to get approval from the book’s authors, so we pitched them the idea and they were very supportive with the direction we were heading.”

Obviously if you were going to center a game around Drummer, you would want to bring on the talented Cara Gee to reprise her role from the show — ot only because her character is amazing, but doing so would bring a tremendous level of authenticity to the game’s immersion factor. As it turns out, Gee was more than willing to return to her belter roots and made herself available as often as possible during the game’s development.

“Cara was awesome to work with, 10/10 would do again,” says Frost. “When we met her, we needed to do an ADR (Automated Dialogue Replacement) recording while she was filming for a TV show in Canada. We contacted a remote studio to have her come in and do some voice over work, which was in a small studio in someone’s backyard. She was extremely friendly, funny, and patient and hearing her sweet everyday voice drop into the basement for Drummer’s iconic sound was awesome to see and hear. When we were recording on set, we maintained a relaxed and positive atmosphere and she was a big part of that. No ego, worked hard, and brought great insight from her time on the show. We wouldn’t have done it without her… and couldn’t have even if we wanted to.”
