How Ebenezer and the Invisible World Adapts “A Christmas Carol” into a Metroidvania

Ebenezer and the Invisible World, releasing today,is a fantasy reimagination and sequel to Charles Dickens’ classic Christmas ghost story, “A Christmas Carol”. In this beautiful 2D Metroidvania, players play the role of Ebenezer Scrooge after the events of the original story as he sets off on a Victorian adventure to help the people of London from the greedy industrialist Caspar Malthus.

EIW city view

Jacob Marley as Archetype for a Ghost Filled London

The creative process for Ebenezer and the Invisible World began with exploring one character in particular: Jacob Marley.

As many of us know, Jacob Marley was Ebenezer’s friend and business partner who died after living a greedy life. Marley explains that he is condemned to walk the earth among his fellow men while wearing “the chains I forged in life” made “link by link, and yard by yard.”

EIW ghosts

We thought to ourselves, what if Jacob Marley was not the only ghost in London tethered to the mortal world? What if there were others? In fact, what if the world was full of ghosts just like Jacob Marley – all draped in the chains they forged in life? Jacob Marley became our visual archetype for a ghostly population that would fill Victorian London.

EIW Ebenezer

This is a natural extension of the “Christmas Carol” universe. In fact, Charles Dickens contemplated this same concept. He wrote in “A Christmas Carol”, “the air was filled with phantoms. Every one of them wore chains like Marley’s Ghost. The misery with them all was, clearly, that they sought to interfere, for good, in human matters, and had lost the power, forever.”

EIW orb

This idea that Dickens puts forth – ghosts wanting to help people but are unable to do so – inspired our next concept: What if these ghosts who want to help “in human matters” but were unable to do so asked Ebenezer to help on their behalf? Afterall, Ebenezer can see and speak with Jacob Marley, so wouldn’t Ebenezer be able to speak with other ghosts? And if they could speak with Ebenezer, we think these ghosts would do more than just seek him out, they would implore Ebenezer to help them.

And so, from this premise the core gameplay loop was born: Ghosts would ask Ebenezer to help a mortal, and he would then engage on a mission to help them on behalf of ghosts.

EIW screenshot

Importantly for making a fun game, ghosts provide incredible freedom in developing compelling gameplay. We focus on the potential of ghosts in creating gameplay mechanics and a narrative universe that is compelling, meaningful, and engaging.

EIW attack

Powerful Ghosts and the Unrepentant

In Ebenezer and the Invisible World, a ghost will join Ebenezer on his adventure after completing a mission on their behalf. In gameplay, this means players can toggle between ghosts in the Ghost Select Wheel and, with the press of a button, summon the ghost to perform a special attack or movement. Each ghost has a unique special ability, contributing to the core gameplay loop in our Metroidvania, such as accessing previously gated areas, discovering secrets, and defeating new enemies.

EIW screenshot

Ebenezer and the Invisible World also features ghosts as enemies, known as the Unrepentant. These are wicked ghosts that do not regret the misdeeds in their human life and instead are content continuing along their old ways. These ghosts spurn humankind and occupy abandoned areas, such as forgotten tunnels, the deep forest, abandoned homes, and other places typically void of human presence. Because they separate themselves from humanity, the Unrepentants’ spectral shape begins to lose its human form and appears more creature-like… more monstrous.

EIW book pages

Ebenezer Reimagined

With this framework of the Dickensian universe, we began crafting the journey that our redeemed Ebenezer would embark on. Our central premise revolved around the notion that the events experienced by Ebenezer Scrooge during “A Christmas Carol” were not isolated incidents. Dickens implies that Ebenezer Scrooge is the only person to ever be visited by the Christmas Spirits, but we like to think that following Ebenezer’s first adventure, the connection between this “invisible world” and the real one only became stronger.

EIW ghosts

In our game, ghosts tethered to the mortal world who witness the moral decline of a friend or loved one call upon the Christmas Spirits to offer a chance at redemption, much like Jacob Marley did for Ebenezer before he was visited by the Christmas Spirits.

EIW battle

The story of Ebenezer and the Invisible World starts with the spirit of a deceased British naval officer Eric Fellows warning his childhood friend, the cold-hearted industrialist Caspar Malthus, that he would be visited by the Christmas Spirits. However, in the case of Caspar, rather than being persuaded by the Three Ghosts, he uses the information he obtained during his visit with the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come to develop a technology that he would not be able to invent until far into his future. This future technology puts the workers of the city in crisis and brings chaos to London. Eric is horrified by this result and recruits Ebenezer to help rectify the situation. This is where our game begins.

EIW closeup

A Deep, Story Rich Metroidvania

Players will explore various segments of London from a celestial observatory to a terrifying asylum. They will meet ghostly friends and foes eager to lend a hand with their ghostly ability, or hell-bent on stopping him by any means necessary.

EIW escape

The game is filled with features including an Heirloom slot system, multiple attack Canes and Spirit Weapons, stat-buffing Spirit Kids, and a wealth of ghosts and NPCs with rich dialogue and backstories, with gameplay that reminds players that everyone deserves a second chance. And since it’s a Metroidvania, players will likely need a second…third…fourth…more chances to progress through the game and discover the true evil at play.

EIW descent

We hope Ebenezer and the Invisible World brings players a new way to celebrate the holidays, as well as pays homage to one of the most famous pieces of holiday literature of all time.

Headbangers Rhythm Royale is Available Day One with Game Pass

“What is going on in their head?” a commonly asked question when it comes to our feathered pigeon friends and their slightly hypnotic, moderately creepy, and always incessant head bobbing. After years of extensive research on the topic an answer has finally been found, and that answer is music (and probably also bread, but mostly music).

HB screenshot

Headbangers Rhythm Royale lets you experience the pigeon-verse first hand. Transporting you – feathers and all – to a world fit to burst with music, melodies, and a medley of chaotic mini-games that will test your memory, rhythm, reflexes, reaction time, and (obviously) your ability to rap on command.

Peeking into the psyche of a pigeon makes for an exhilarating experience – you’ll need to showcase your im-peck-able memory skills in Yes Commander; master the piano with a slingshot in First Piano Shooter; and be the first to blast off into the solar system in To The Sky to name just a few of the joys that await.

HB screenshot

With the free in-game pigeon pass, your efforts on and off the dancefloor will be generously rewarded, by collecting delicious breadcrumbs, (please take our word for it and don’t try and eat them), and in game XP, earned through collecting powerups in game, and acing the bonus rounds sprinkled between mini games, you’ll level up, unlocking unique customisation to help you prune your pigeon to perfection.

HB screenshot

With your wings piled high with your hard-earned breadcrumbs, your next stop is sure to be the pigeon store – outfits, hats, glasses, voices, taunts, and more are on the menu, and the mixture of full outfits and individual items, makes for thousands of unique pigeon designs. Want to see T-rex arms on a pigeon? You got it. Or how about an Elvis pigeon? We’ll take one of those, thank you, thank you very much. Castle costume? Your princess can’t be in another castle if you are the castle.

HB screenshot

It’s time for you to pigeon dive headfirst into the world of Headbangers Rhythm Royale as it is out now on Xbox Consoles via Xbox Game Pass. Dress up your pigeon, take to the dancefloor, and put your best foot forward as you battle to be the Master Headbanger.

Explore the Fearless Art of the Le Sserafim x Overwatch 2 Collaboration

Explore the Fearless Art of the Le Sserafim x Overwatch 2 Collaboration

Overwatch 2 is teaming up with K-pop phenomenon Le Sserafim for the game’s first-ever musical artist event, hot on the release of their hit new single, “Perfect Night.”

The collaboration with Le Sserafim, whose name is an anagram for the phrase “I’m Fearless,” will feature new animations from the world of Overwatch. This all kicks off now, with a new in-game event, Concert Clash, that you can play on Xbox.

This unique partnership will also introduce all-new Legendary skins and amazing art crafted by the team at the Blizzard Korea Studio. To learn more about the work involved in bringing Le Sserafim to the world of Overwatch 2, we asked concept artists Shu Lee, Bobby Kim, and Dospi Jin about what it was like to bring these two worlds together.

How excited were you to create new skins based on Le Sserafim?

Bobby Kim: We had fun discussions about character modeling, rigging, and illustrations almost daily throughout the project. As the lead concept artist in Korea, I had many questions about how we could bring our incredibly unique heroes and members of Le Sserafim together and what they would look like in the world of Overwatch. Everyone worked hard to ensure that both Overwatch players and Le Sserafim fans were happy. With help from the rest of the Overwatch 2 development team, we did our best to make sure this collaboration was a success.

Shu Lee: As a concept artist for Overwatch and a fan of K-pop, I have always hoped that Overwatch would do a K-pop collaboration someday. When I first heard there would be a collaboration with Le Sserafim and that our team would work on it along with the rest of Team 4, I was over the moon! I couldn’t wait to start sketching and designing the skins right away.

Dospi Jin: I have played thousands of hours of Overwatch 2, and I am also a huge fan of K-pop, keeping track of every new song and artist. Being able to take part in the collaboration between Le Sserafim and Overwatch is one of the happiest moments of my life.

Was there any inspiration from their music and identity that helped with concepts?

Bobby Kim: While Le Sserafim’s songs were already battling for the number one spot on my playlist, capturing the potential of these amazing K-pop artists in a singular form felt like a challenge. When I was producing the initial ideations, Le Sserafim was singing about being ‘fearless’ and strong through their song, “AntiFragile,” and I was inspired by how they were showing their colors primarily through the use of denim in their outfits. Then I started to imagine Kiriko being a fan of Le Sserafim in the world of Overwatch and how she would present herself in that same style.

Shu Lee: I was heavily inspired by the word ‘Fearless’ itself, which was the origin of the group’s name, Le Sserafim. I also wanted to capture the dynamic and bright image of Le Sserafim and the “fearless” energy of the members in the design, as there hasn’t been a lot of streetwear or everyday outfits for Overwatch’s heroes until now.

Dospi Jin: I created the two key art illustrations for the collab — Le Sserafim featuring the group and the Le Sserafim Fans Illustration of D.Va, Kiriko, Tracer, Brigitte, and Sombra. It took a long time to complete them. I use three monitors when working on images, and during that time, one of them was constantly playing Le Sserafim’s music videos and vlogs. I memorized every gesture, expression, and intonation of the members to project them into my illustrations. All of those were my sources of inspiration.

Are there any fun details or facts about the skins players should look out for?

Bobby Kim: Overwatch’s heroes usually wear outfits that reveal more of their personalities and other characteristics. However, in the world where Le Sserafim and Overwatch coexist, we wanted to showcase our heroes’ everyday lives, cheering on Le Sserafim through stylish streetwear. By using the same materials but contrasting the placements — such as D.va wearing a denim top and pants to show her daily life outside of her duties and Kiriko wearing a denim jacket around her waist — we tried to highlight different charms and personalities of each hero. The image of Kiriko enjoying the concert, using tickets instead of her Ofudas, and protecting her allies with Mirrorball Suzu was the brainchild of our concept artists.

Using Le Sserafim’s logo for “Perfect Night” as part of the decorations on the outfit, with a similar iridescent element, was another effort to bring Le Sserafim into the world of Overwatch.

Shu Lee: I got to work on Brigitte’s Rocket Flail weapon. When I first thought about the design for her flail, the official Le Sserafim lightstick had just been released, so I tried to combine the lightstick with it to create Brigitte’s own version. However, there were some concerns, mainly because the original flail had four blades, and the idea of using only two was new to all of us. Still, we finally made it possible thanks to the help from the Character Modeling, Tech Art, and animation teams.

Other details that everyone from the Concept Art team paid attention to for this perfect K-pop fangirl looks are the banner tied to the Mech’s ‘bunny ears’ and the concert wristband for D.Va, the lightsticks attached to Tracer’s Chronal Accelerator, and the backpack to carry all the merch. There are a lot more cute elements you will love! Lastly, check out the victory pose and emotes using Le Sserafim’s dance moves. Those are just too adorable!

Dospi Jin: I have created Overwatch illustrations before, and it has been almost two years since my last one. In the meantime, I have been working on the art production of Overwatch 2 as a part of the Blizzard Korea Studio team. I am delighted to present new Overwatch 2 illustrations to everyone after such a long time.

When working on the Le Sserafim illustration, I had a lot of challenges. I wanted everyone to recognize the members at a glance while stylizing their faces. I worked on implementing the unique facial features and personalities of each member, changing the angles and lengths of noses, eyes, and mouths down to the pixel level for a whole month, all while aiming to portray the members as beautifully as possible.

The Le Sserafim Fans illustration can be thought of as an illustrated version of the last scene from the “Perfect Night” music video. I wanted to express the passion of the space, the happiness, and the joy of heroes like D.Va, Kiriko, Sombra, Tracer, and Brigitte going to a Le Sserafim concert in their collaborative skins. If you look closely, you’ll find Junkrat making a cameo as a big fan of Le Sserafim!

Play and Collect New Le Sserafim Skins Now in Overwatch 2!

Play Concert Clash, a new 3v3 capture-the-flag mode set in a K-pop themed Busan. Play as Dazzle D.Va, Kira-Kira Kiriko, Traysi Tracer, BB Brigitte, and Slay Star Sombra as you compete for tickets and capture points while stopping Le Sserafim’s (self-proclaimed) biggest fan, Fawksy James (a.k.a. Junkrat), from hoarding all of the tickets. Complete challenges throughout the event to earn up to 35,000 Battle Pass XP and the Fawksy James Legendary skin for Junkrat.

Also, make sure you head for the in-game shop, where you can add each of the new Legendary skins for D.Va, Kiriko, Tracer, Brigitte, and Sombra and other Le Sserafim themed cosmetics with the Mega LE Le Sserafim Bundle available throughout the event.

The Overwatch 2 x Le Sserafim event is now live on Xbox! Hurry, though, because the show ends on November 20, 2023!
