Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth’s minigames are each a new sensory organ for its many novelties

So, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, eh? I liked it a lot. 150 hours a lot. I big cried at least twice and welled up, much like a well, many other times. As much as I’d like to wax emotional about the plot and characters in an endless lifestream-of-consciousness ramble, articles need both headlines and subjects (truly an act of conspiratorial violence targeted at my personal dadaist instincts). So, let’s talk about just the minigames, because I think they’re wonderful for all sort of reasons that might not be immediately apparent. Naturally, big spoiler potential ahead if, like me, you consider everything you haven’t experienced in the RPG game a spoiler.

I think one of OG Final Fantasy’s 7 best tricks is how it doesn’t just dish out its strangest distractions as a palette cleanser to the main meal of its action and drama, but actively works them in as an indispensable part of the menu. It also does this all without a shred of shame or self-consciousness, resulting in a cinematic video game with no inner turmoil or resentment toward either part of that equation – a characteristic I feel is suffered from by many of the games for which FF7 lead the way. Take the Gold Saucer. It’s an excuse to dick around and ride motorbikes, sure, but it’s also an essential story beat while the party takes time to relax and enjoy each other’s company away from the stress of travel and battle.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 proves that fetch quests are good as long as the space in between is interesting

I think its reasonable to say that the term ‘fetch quest’ is well passed the point of being a neutral descriptor and has moved firmly into the realm of full pejorative. You won’t see many games tout ‘epic fetch quests’ on their Steam Page, and you’re much more likely to hear the term lodged between the words ‘not a bloody’ and ‘again’, like two slices of exasperation-enriched bread stuffed with a shit-tier filling. Cucumber, perhaps. Not so, at least not for me, when it comes to Dragon’s Dogma 2. The action RPG game has more or less solved the fetch quest problem. All it took, it turns out, was some interesting world design.

Watch Out, ‘Rain World’ Is Getting Another Major Expansion

Keep watching.

Rain World, known for its lush visuals and brutal difficulty, is getting another major expansion soon to accompany last year’s Downpour DLC.

Dubbed ‘The Watcher’, it’s only been confirmed for Steam at the time of writing, but we feel reasonably confident that it will also make its way to Nintendo’s console at some point down the road.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 Title Update 1.050 Adds ‘Start New game’, Max 30fps Option, More

Capcom has released the first title update for Dragon’s Dogma 2, adding some crucial features to the game.

Update 1.050, out now on PC via Steam and PlayStation 5, and on Xbox Series X and S “in the next few days”, adds the option to start a new game when save data already exists. Inexplicably, Dragon’s Dogma 2 launched without this option, although modders soon brute-forced it into the PC version.

Elsewhere, Capcom has boosted the number of Art of Metamorphosis items available at Pawn Guilds to 99. Art of Metamorphosis lets you edit your character, and is one of many day-one microtransactions Capcom is currently selling for real-world money.

Meanwhile, Dragon’s Dogma 2 on console gets various graphics and performance options, including a toggle for motion blur and ray tracing. Crucially, Capcom has added the option to switch frame-rate to either variable or max 30fps. Players have criticized Dragon’s Dogma 2’s frame-rate, which Capcom has said is linked to stress put on CPUs by a large number of NPCs. It’s worth noting that Capcom said the motion blur and ray tracing toggle does not improve the game’s frame-rate significantly, but meaningful improvements are coming further down the line.

Despite a controversy over microtransactions and a backlash to the game’s performance, particularly on PC, Dragon’s Dogma 2 is the biggest launch for a single-player Capcom game on Steam, with an impressive 228,585 peak concurrents. If you’re playing Dragon’s Dogma 2, be sure to check out IGN’s interactive map, our walkthrough hub, and our guides on Pawns and Pawn Specializations.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 title update patch notes:

  • Adding the option to start a new game when save data already exists.
  • Changing the number of “Art of Metamorphosis” items available at Pawn Guilds in the game to 99.
  • Making the quest that allows players to acquire their own dwelling (where they can save and rest) available earlier in the game.
  • Miscellaneous text display issues.
  • Miscellaneous bug fixes.

[PlayStation5]

  • Adding the option* to switch Motion Blur on/off in Options.
  • Adding the option* to switch Ray Tracing on/off in Options.
  • Adding the option to set Frame Rate at Max 30fps in Options.

[Steam]

  • Improving quality when DLSS SUPER RESOLUTION is enabled.
  • Fixing an issue related to the display of models under some specific settings.
  • *These options won’t affect frame rate significantly. Improvements to frame rate are planned for future updates.
