Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered is coming to PS5, PC October 31, 2024

Over seven years ago, we released Horizon Zero Dawn into the wilds. Players got to meet Aloy, our leading hero, thrust into a journey of (self-)discovery in a mysterious, far-future world ravaged by deadly machines.

It was also the beginning of a thriving community of cosplayers, virtual photographers, fan artists, and content creators who inspire us to this day with their incredible creations. Horizon Zero Dawn is near and dear to many fans, as well as to everyone at Guerrilla.

And that community has not stopped growing. Each year, many millions more pick up Horizon Zero Dawn for the first time. But 7 years is a long time in the world of computer graphics; technology improves. As time moved on, we really wished that new players who join Aloy on her origin story can do it with a version that is worthy of their PS5 or compatible PC. And so, we are thrilled to announce that the game has been remastered by our talented friends at Nixxes.

Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered launches on October 31. The captivating story and awe-inspiring post-apocalyptic world returns alongside a host of technological improvements, visual enhancements, and upgraded features. It also includes The Frozen Wilds content, a vast expansion featuring additional lands, skills, weapons, and machines. Take a look at the announcement trailer below.

Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered features over 10 hours of re-recorded conversation, mocap and countless graphical improvements that bring the game to the same visual fidelity as its critically acclaimed sequel Horizon Forbidden West. The game’s lush world includes frozen mountains, dense jungles, and arid deserts with stunning new visuals and 4K1 graphics and travelling between settlements is now lightning-fast.

The story’s many compelling characters have been upgraded, bringing them in line with current generation advances in character models and rendering. We hope that improved animation, lightning, textures and more will make new and existing fans excited to dive into the action!

The audio experience in Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered has been significantly enhanced. We’ve completely revamped the sound mix, now supporting PS5 Tempest 3D Audio Tech2 for higher-order ambisonics and Atmos rendering for an immersive soundscape. Our sound design has also seen major improvements, with hundreds of improvements both in-game and in the cinematics.

Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered takes full advantage of the PS5 console’s power and features. The DualSense controller’s haptic feedback and adaptive triggers ensure incredible immersion during tense combat, stealthy exploration, or scaling a gigantic Tallneck. We’ve integrated custom  haptics for the DualSense controller throughout the game, providing tactile feedback that heightens immersion. Additionally, we’ve introduced a new optional accessibility feature that utilizes sound and haptic feedback to notify players of interactable elements, such as pickups, that were previously only indicated visually.

We’re also very happy to share that Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered comes with native support for PlayStation 5 Pro. This includes a range of graphical features that have been improved to make use of the power of the PS5 Pro, while also delivering ultra-high fidelity at blazing fast framerates.

The PC version3 on Windows includes the PlayStation overlay with Trophy support and has its own set of features, such as support for ultra-wide resolutions and the latest performance enhancing technologies like NVIDIA DLSS 3 and AMD FSR 3.1 with frame generation4. We will let our Nixxes partners expand more in a future blog.

Many of the accessibility features that were first introduced in Horizon Forbidden West have been included for this Remastered version as well; remappable controls, haptic cues, and various assist toggles will enable all players to fully enjoy the game.

For those that have already played it, we’ve made sure that your old save games will work; so this is a great opportunity to dive into New Game+ or get back into Photo Mode with all your previously unlocked outfits and customizations.

We’re excited to share that pre-orders for Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered will open on 3 October for both platforms.

For existing owners of Horizon Zero Dawn (PS4, PC) and/or Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition (PS4, PS5, PC): you can upgrade to the digital version of Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered for $9.99 on both PlayStation 5 console and on PC (via Steam or Epic Game Store). This includes fans who added the game to their libraries during PlayStation’s Play At Home initiative. 5

Owners of the Horizon Zero Dawn PS4 game disc can access this offer by inserting the game disc into their PS5 console (and will need to keep the disc inserted each time to play the game). PS4 game disc owners who buy the PS5 Digital Edition disc-free console will not be able to access the upgrade offer.

For new fans, the game can be purchased for $49.996 on PlayStation Store, Steam, or Epic Game Store. You will receive the Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition.

We will have some more information as we get closer to release day on October 31, so keep an eye on our social channels for updates. From all of us at Guerrilla and Nixxes, thank you for your continued support!

Tekken 8: hands-on with Heihachi Mishima

Tekken 8 launched earlier this year, but it feels like so much has happened in the game between then and now: several major tournament showcases, numerous game updates and adjustments, and two fan-favorite DLC characters. Now, Tekken 8 is preparing for the return of none other than Heihachi Mishima, unkillable like a cockroach and eager to reclaim the title of Mishima clan overlord.

Bandai Namco gave us a sneak peek at the upcoming version 1.08, which launches on October 3 on PS5, that adds Heihachi as a playable character along with a brand-new stage and a new set of story fights and cinematics continuing the Tekken 8 saga. We also chatted with Tekken series Creative Director Katsuhiro Harada and Tekken 8 Director Kohei Ikeda.

Spending quality time with the fighting world’s worst dad

If you’re worried that Heihachi’s near-death experience fundamentally changed his gameplay, fear not. Much of Heihachi’s moveset will be very familiar to Tekken veterans, and the old, beloved staples like the Wind God Fist are still around to make you feel right at home.

Now showing slide 1 of 2

That’s not to say that he doesn’t have any new tricks. Two new stances, Thunder God and Wind God, can be entered into at certain points and allow him to use some powerful new moves. And that’s not all: Heihachi can also transform with Warrior Instinct, a powered-up state that requires Heihachi to go into Heat state three times. Warrior Instinct grants various buffs, like more damage to recoverable health, and altered/additional skills. For example, Heihachi’s axe kick, which is already a good pressure tool, gets additional follow-ups when Warrior Instinct is activated. However,  since Heat usage is restricted to once per round you’ll only be able to see Heihachi at his maximum potential when you’re pretty deep into battle.

“When we brought Heihachi back from his ‘death,’ we needed it to feel convincing. He needed to seem powerful if he was able to survive. I wanted a new gameplay mechanic to link into the story. The Tekken Monks, which debut in the new story content, are also linked to Heihachi. We wanted him to feel like he’d learned some of the secret, long-buried techniques of the Mishima Style,” states Tekken 8 Director Kohei Ikeda.

Heihachi also comes with a brand-new stage, the Genmaji Temple, a secluded hideaway among a beautiful forest where the Tekken Monks train around the clock. Both daytime and dusk variants of the level are available to fight on.

“We wanted the stage to be a centerpiece for Heihachi’s return,” Ikeda continues. “We wanted the stage to reflect Japanese stylistic tastes, like the falling leaves indicating the shift from autumn to winter. But since it is a training ground, we wanted to hammer home that it’s a place where people have practiced martial arts from long ago — but there’s also a touch of humor when you see the strange moves the Monks are doing.”

The tale of Fists and Fate continues

I also had the opportunity to run through the new story content being added in the next update. This episode, titled Unforgotten Echoes, focuses on Eddy, Lidia, and Yoshimitsu coming together in the midst of the ongoing conflict. Eddy’s trying to atone for his crimes with the Tekken Force, while Lidia’s received word of a secluded tribe of monks with ancient ties to the Mishima clan. When they travel to the Genmaji Temple, the trio encounter a very unexpected but very familiar face.

“Heihachi is very important for the ongoing story, but he’s also a character that a lot of players want,” says Katsuhiro Harada who is the Creative Director of the Tekken series. “The same could be said for both Eddy and Lidia. Eddy was necessary for the storyline, and Capoeira is an iconic martial art that a lot of people enjoy, so we wanted to include him. And then Lidia was added at the end of Tekken 7. She uses karate and proved to be extremely popular.  So the factors we consider are: they play important story roles, players wanted them, were used a lot, or had new fighting backdrops. The DLC characters so far have those elements, which is why they were added.”

The Tekken 8 update patch drops on October 3 on PS5. Early access begins September 30 for those who preorder. Even if you’re not planning on purchasing Heihachi, the Unforgotten Echoes story and some other new content, including a customizable home screen, will be available for free to all players.

(For Singapore and Malaysia) Welcome PlayStation 5 Pro, the most visually impressive way to play games on PlayStation

UPDATE: PlayStation 5 Pro will launch in Singapore and Malaysia on November 7, 2024 with Suggested Retail Price (SRP) of SGD 1,069 / RM 3,849. Pre-order will begin from September 26, 2024 in participating retailers

Over the last four years since the launch of PS5, we’ve worked hard to continuously evolve the console experience and deliver the great games our players expect from us. Today, I’m incredibly proud to announce the next step in that evolution and welcome PlayStation 5 Pro to the PlayStation family – our most advanced and innovative console hardware to date.

(For Singapore and Malaysia) Welcome PlayStation 5 Pro, the most visually impressive way to play games on PlayStation

We developed PS5 Pro with deeply engaged players and game creators in mind – as many have asked for a console that runs even higher fidelity graphics with smoother frame rates at 60FPS. We achieved this on PS5 Pro with several key performance features.*

  • Upgraded GPU: With PS5 Pro, we are upgrading to a GPU that has 67% more Compute Units than the current PS5 console and 28% faster memory. Overall, this enables up to 45% faster rendering for gameplay, making the experience much smoother.
  • Advanced Ray Tracing: We’ve added even more powerful ray tracing that provides more dynamic reflection and refraction of light. This allows the rays to be cast at double, and at times triple, the speeds of the current PS5 console.
  • AI-Driven Upscaling: We’re also introducing PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, an AI-driven upscaling that uses a machine learning-based technology to provide super sharp image clarity by adding an extraordinary amount of detail.

PS5 Pro provides gamers with amazing graphics at high frame rates. You can hear Mark Cerny, lead architect for PS5 Pro, discuss the key innovations from PS5 Pro in the following video presentation. This presentation provides a deep dive into the key performance features that make PS5 Pro truly special.

(For Singapore and Malaysia) Welcome PlayStation 5 Pro, the most visually impressive way to play games on PlayStation

Other enhancements include PS5 Pro Game Boost, which can apply to more than 8,500 backward compatible PS4 games playable on PS5 Pro. This feature may stabilize or improve the performance of supported PS4 and PS5 games. Enhanced Image Quality for PS4 games is also available to improve the resolution on select PS4 games. PS5 Pro will also launch with the latest wireless technology, Wi-Fi 7, in territories supporting this standard. VRR and 8K gaming are also supported.

It’s humbling to see how game creators have embraced the latest technology from PS5 Pro, and several games will be patched with free software updates for gamers to take advantage of PS5 Pro’s features. These games can be identified with a PS5 Pro Enhanced label within their title. Some games you can look forward to include blockbuster hits from PlayStation Studios and our third-party partners, such as Alan Wake 2, Assassin’s Creed: Shadows, Demon’s Souls, Dragon’s Dogma 2, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Gran Turismo 7, Hogwarts Legacy, Horizon Forbidden West, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, The Crew Motorfest, The First Descendant, The Last of Us Part II Remastered, and more.

We kept the look of the PS5 Pro consistent with the overall PS5 family of products. You’ll notice the height is the same size as the original PS5, and the width is the same size as the current PS5 model to accommodate higher performance specs. Players can add an Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive, or swap out console covers when they become available.

PS5 Pro fits perfectly within the PS5 family of products and is compatible with the PS5 accessories currently available, including PlayStation VR2, PlayStation Portal, DualSense Edge, Access controller, Pulse Elite and Pulse Explore. The user interface and network services will also remain the same as PS5.

The PS5 Pro console will be available this holiday at a manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) of $699.99 USD, £699.99 GBP, €799.99 EUR, and ¥119,980 JPY (includes tax). It will include a 2TB SSD, a DualSense wireless controller and a copy of Astro’s Playroom pre-installed in every PS5 Pro purchase. PS5 Pro is available as a disc-less console, with the option to purchase the currently available Disc Drive for PS5 separately.

PS5 Pro will launch on November 7, 2024 and will be available at participating retailers. Preorders will begin on September 26, 2024.

Our PS5 journey would not be possible without the millions of players that have supported us through the years and have shared with us their love of gaming. Whichever console option players choose, whether it’s PS5 or PS5 Pro, we wish to bring everyone the very best gaming experience that fits their needs.

*Features only available on select PS5 games that have been enhanced for PS5 Pro when compared with the PS5. PS5 Pro enhanced features will vary by game.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard – hands-on report

BioWare’s lore-rich fantasy RPG series makes its long-awaited return when Dragon Age: The Veilguard comes to PS5 on October 31, after nearly a decade since the last installment. The Veilguard takes place across the northern region of Thedas, giving players a chance to finally explore the magical city of Tevinter. As a first-time visitor to Thedas’ world of magic, my recent hands-on with the game was an enlightening introduction to the deep storytelling of the series grounded by the game’s intuitive real-time combat and enchanting visuals.

Customize everything

My hands-on journey began by thoroughly exploring The Veilguard’s extensive character creator, following an opening animation highlighting where the story left off in Dragon Age: Inquisition. The Dragon Age series is known to offer highly detailed character customization, but I was surprised to see just how in-depth The Veilguard went with options to customize nearly every physical aspect of your character, from diverse head and body shapes to tattoos (options for face and full body), make-up, and facial scars. In particular, the various hair textures shown in the selection of close to 100 hairstyles look so detailed and realistic that you can see the care developers put into each hair follicle.

Once I finished customizing my character for nearly half an hour (I could have spent hours on this), I played around with the new lighting preview feature. The new feature allows you to see your character in up to four different lighting settings to ensure your creation is faithful to your vision before you commence your journey through Thedas.

Similar to past games in the series the character creator is where you choose your combatant’s race and class. Additionally, The Veilguard adds a feature to pick between six Factions, including options for Grey Wardens, Veil Jumpers, Shadow Dragons, Lords of Fortune, the Mourn Watch, and Antivan Crows. Be sure to select carefully as a chosen Faction directly influences a character’s unique backstory and even future dialogue choices.

Combat with companions

The fast-paced and intuitive combat in Dragon Age: The Veilguard was the cherry on top of my experience with the game. As a self-described beginner when it comes to most game genres, the combat controls were easy enough to pick up while providing a high ceiling for the more advanced players to put together combo attacks with companions.

Now showing slide 1 of 3

In Dragon Age: The Veilguard you control your companion’s abilities through the new Ability Wheel, as opposed to switching between and fully controlling your party members like you could in Dragon Age: Inquisition. Pulling up the Ability Wheel halts the action and lets you trigger your personal and companions’ abilities. Switching between real-time combat and the Ability Wheel felt natural and served as a quick break from all-out action, giving me a chance to plan combo attacks with companions or trigger my own abilities. Punctuating combo attacks by unleashing an Ultimate ability served as one of the more satisfying tenets of the gameplay experience, though it was rare I was able to pull off such a feat.

Trek through Thedas

Stepping foot in Minrathous, the capital of Tevinter, players are met with vivid colors and an impressively expansive depth of field. From the finely tuned details of raindrops splashing into puddles and broken-up concrete, to the sky-high architecture and statues seen from a distance, the visual fidelity of The Veilguard is truly immersive and encourages exploring freely.

Now showing slide 1 of 2

The graphics especially shine when you’re tasked to travel through the Arlathan Forest to find missing Veil Jumpers. The contrast in color of the shadow-casting trees is highlighted by sunlight peering through their branches, showing the attention to detail paid by the developers in terms of lighting and photorealism in varied environments.

Friends help friends

Each companion I met on my voyage through Thedas made an impression and drew me deeper into the story, though my limited playing time didn’t allow me to meet the whole cast.

“The companions are really the stars of the show just as much as anyone else,” John Epler, Creative Director, BioWare.

Early on you’ll meet Neve Gallus, the self-assured private investigator who helps locate Solas to prevent a major catastrophe from ensuing in the game’s prologue. Born and raised in Minrathous, Neve’s confident demeanor helps guide the team through Tevinter early in the game, and her Ice Breaker ability that rains down shards of ice on foes was a joy to activate.

There’s so much to chew on when it comes to the depth of the character creator, RPG elements, and real-time combat in The Veilguard, but being able to quickly grasp the action basics allowed me to immerse in the world. The Veil between Thedas and the Fade lifts this Halloween, when Dragon Age: The Veilguard releases October 31 on PS5.
