Don’t Expect To See Future Super Mario Games On Mobile, Suggests Miyamoto

“Mobile apps will not be the primary path”.

When it comes to Nintendo’s mobile offerings, it’s safe to say that the general consensus amongst fans is something along the lines of “yeah, good effort, but not what we’re looking for”. Despite this, Mario Kart Tour in particular has seen considerable success over the last few years with no signs of slowing down, but when you look at games like Super Mario Run and Dr. Mario World, it certainly feels like they’ve just sort of come and gone (quite literally with Dr. Mario’s case).

With this in mind, Variety recently sat down to speak with Shigeru Miyamoto on the upcoming launch of the new Super Mario Bros. Movie, and the legendary creator made it quite clear that future Mario titles will likely not appear on smartphones in any capacity, stating “Mobile apps will not be the primary path of future Mario games.”

Tin Hearts has been cooking for a little while now, but with the game boasting over 40 levels of “time-bending, soldier-routing riddles” and the ex-Lionhead pedigree on the dev team, we’re hopeful this one is going to be worth the wait. We’ve in for a treat in the audio department, too, with the game’s soundtrack being handled by award-winning composer Matthew Chastney, who has previously produced music for movie trailers including Joker and Venom: Let There Be Carnage.

Last week, after ending 3DS and Wii U eShop sales, Nintendo announced it would be extending the period to redeem a code to make up for certain technical difficulties.

The new date was extended until 4th April 2023 in Japan, and that means this extra time to redeem codes has now also ended here in the west. This marks the end of the ability to purchase or acquire new digital software in any way or form on these eShops.

Ninterview: Menko Cards And Niche Nintendo History – The Hunt For Mario’s Rookie Card

A different kind of ‘game card’.

If you have ever read up on the history of Nintendo, you know that before it went into the video game business, the company began life by making cards and other novelties. The hanafuda and playing cards which Nintendo produced from its formation in 1889 took a back seat following the popularity of toys like the Ultra Hand in the 1960s, and the company would soon move into electronic games and, ultimately, arcade and video games.

But this is not to say that the company left cards behind completely. Nintendo-branded Japanese Menko cards were released in Japan in the early 1980s and collector Ben Gilmore has a sizeable colletion of these lesser-known Nintendo-branded cards. This milk cap/Pog-like tabletop game is older than Nintendo itself, and there are Nintendo Menkos with Mario designs that date from the plumber’s pre-NES arcade days.
