Review: Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club (Switch) – A Stylish Mystery With One Foot In The Past

Smells like teen…MURDER?!

Has there ever been a horror movie that’s used elevator music successfully as its entire soundtrack? We mean a reasonably good one. Any suggestions? It almost seems there may be something tonally mismatched about the idea — unless you’re going for comedy — and, honestly, when playing Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club, it’s sometimes tough to know whether it’s horror or humour we’re supposed to be enjoying. It’s hard to know whether to laugh or cry.

This brand new entry in the Famicom Detective Club adventure series has managed to arrive to quite a bit more fanfare and interest than would usually be reserved for an entry in a visual novel franchise that, whilst perfectly fine, has never really set the gaming world alight. Old has-beens (like this writer) sampled Tantei Club Part II via fan translation and enjoyed it for what it was, but whilst the 2021 remakes are nice to have, it’s hard to say they are absolute must-plays, even whilst recognising their importance in terms of influencing the likes of Ace Attorney.

Worms Armageddon On Switch Will Also Contain The Game Boy Color Version

Plus a bevy of development interviews.

During the recent Nintendo Direct Partner Showcase, it was confirmed that Worms Armageddon: Anniversary Edition would be heading to the Nintendo Switch on 26th September 2024.

Now, just that fact alone is enough to have us polishing up our Holy Hand Grenades in anticipation, but information provided as part of the announcement has frankly got us giddy with excitment. We should have known better, of course, since the new release is being handled by the development wizards over at Digital Eclipse, a studio quickly cementing itself as one of the very best in the field of retro revivals.

Reaction: Shadow Drops & Surprises – A Stuffed Direct With Something For Everyone

How did you find the Indie World & Partner Showcase?

Have we all recovered yet?

On the surface, today’s Nintendo Direct Indie World & Partner Showcase wasn’t as show-stopping as the main June 2024 Direct. It was never going to be: by name and virtue alone, this is a Zelda and Mario-free presentation. And we’re slowly approaching the end of the console’s life cycle, with constant reminders of “Yes, the Switch successor is coming, but we’re not talking about it today.”

Exclusive: ‘Loddlenaut’, The Chao Garden-Inspired, Ocean-Cleanup Game, Revealed For Switch

“What we’re releasing on Switch really represents our full vision”.

Whether you’re an environmentally conscious sort or you find compulsive cleaning relaxing, you’ll probably be happy to hear that Loddlenaut, which launched on Steam last November to Overwhelmingly Positive reviews, is coming to Switch on 19th September.

Dubbed “PowerWash SWIMulator” — a groan-worthy pun of the variety we’d be proud had we come up with it — this new version of indie dev Moon Lagoon’s ocean-cleanup game will come with “a major new free update” integrated (which will be launching on PC), and with influences as wide-ranging as the gorgeous Abzu and the Chao Garden from Sonic Adventure 2, it grabbed our attention despite the waves of cosy, cutesy games crashing onto Switch every week.

Video: Sakurai Looks Back On The Super Smash Bros. ‘Dojo’ Marketing Campaigns

“I chose to handle updating the website myself.

We all remember those days leading up to the launch of Smash Bros. entries like BRAWL and Ultimate; waiting for any scrap of new information on potential fighters, stages, items, and more was certainly taxing at times, but goodness, it felt like Christmas morning everytime something significant was revealed.

In his latest video, Masahiro Sakurai looks back on the creation and implementation of the ‘Dojo’ marketing campaigns for the Super Smas Bros. franchise. As he touched on in a previous video, there was an iteration of the campaign for the original N64 title, though this wasn’t particularly well known outside of Japan, and thanks to the infantcy of the internet back in those days, very little of it lived up to Sakurai’s high standards.

Disney Epic Mickey: Rebrushed Publisher Tells Fans To “Stay Tuned”

Some think a demo could be on the way…

Disney Epic Mickey: Rebrushed is one of many games on the way to the Switch in the near future, and if you missed out on a chance to play it at this year’s Gamescom, it seems a surprise could be on the way.

THQ Nordic earlier today informed fans to “stay tuned” if they missed out on the demo at this year’s major gaming event, which took place in Germany last week. It’s led to speculation there could be a “public demo” on the way and as you can see in the shot below, the photo shows an image of the demo from Gamescom:
