Review: Song Of Nunu: A League Of Legends Story – A Tightly-Paced Tune With Echoes Of Old-School Zelda

Walking in a winter wonderland.

It’s been a busy year for Riot’s new Forge publishing arm, aimed at expanding its League of Legends Runeterra universe in games beyond the popular MOBA. In April, we got The Mageseeker, a hi-bit brawler set in the austere kingdom of Demacia, and in June, we got Convergence, a traditional Metroidvania set in the seedy depths of the city of Zaun. To finish out the year, the company has now published Song of Nunu, a narrative action game developed by Tequila Works, which previously developed RiME back in the early days of the Switch library. We’re pleased to report that Song of Nunu is yet another strong addition to the Runeterra universe, expertly combining a gripping narrative with enjoyable gameplay.

Song of Nunu is set in the Freljord, a harsh, frigid, mountainous region in the north of Runeterra, and follows the adventures of an energetic young boy named Nunu and his affable yeti friend, Willump. Nunu’s mother has gone missing since his camp was attacked by raiders and he keeps having dreams where she tells him to find “The Heart of the Blue” at the Winged Mountain. Aided by Willump’s strength, Nunu sets out on a quest to reach the mountain, where he expects to find some answers about what happened to his mother and hopes to be reunited with her. All the while, however, the two are unknowingly pursued by a dangerous ice witch named Lissandra, who wishes to use Willump’s unique powers to help her fight back against a shadowy force that threatens the whole Freljord.

Soapbox: Lavender Town Isn’t Pokémon’s Scariest Location, It’s Someplace Far More Sinister

Trainers beware, you’re in for a scare.

Soapbox features enable our individual writers and contributors to voice their opinions on hot topics and random stuff they’ve been chewing over. Today, Ethan chateaus himself in the creepiest place in the Pokémon world…

Ah, Lavender Town — the place where the journeys of old Pokémon end and the nightmares of young trainers are born. This gothic locale from the original Game Boy titles has transcended its franchise into an iconic piece of pop culture in its own right, and it’s not hard to see why. Between its downbeat aesthetic, its surprisingly forward exploration of mortality, and its plethora of associated internet legends, Lavender Town absolutely deserves its reputation as one of the most memorably spooky places in gaming.

Capcom Has A “Major” Unannounced Title Scheduled To Arrive Before March 2024

What could it be for?

Capcom shared its latest earning results earlier this week, and as part of this, it’s also published a Q&A revealing its intentions to release an unannounced title early next year.

As highlighted by fans of the Japanese company, this game will arrive before the end of its current fiscal year, which is set to end in March 2024. This game will apparently help the Japanese company reach its end-of-year sales targets, but there’s no information beyond this. One likely candidate could be a new Monster Hunter game. There’s also speculation about it being for other key Capcom franchises such as the Resident Evil series.

Coleco’s Failed Negotiations With Nintendo Apparently Resulted In The Birth Of The Famicom

“The rest is history”.

Time Extension recently got the chance to speak to Coleco exec Bert Reiner about the history of the American toy and console maker. According to his account, there was a time when Nintendo almost ended up buying and marketing the 1982 video game system ‘ColecoVision’ for Japan but negotiations fell through.

The former Coleco vice president of product development claims Nintendo wanted to do its own deal and eventually, it got to the point where its company president Hiroshi Yamauchi said Nintendo would develop its own console. This exchange was followed by the launch of the Famicom in 1983.

Feature: The 13 Spookiest Pokémon, Ranked

Spookémon.

At one end of the Pokémon character design spectrum, you have some of the cutest little guys to have ever graced our screens. On the other, you have pure, unapologetic nightmare fuel. As we approach Halloween, it seems only fitting that we take a look at the latter, right?

Okay, perhaps delving into the complete horrors of the Pokédex would be stretching things too far (and we have already considered which ‘mon would be the tastiest in the past if you’re really after some horror), but spookiest… now that’s another question entirely. These guys are not necessarily the most terrifying to look at (you won’t find any Guzzlord, Mawile, or Machamp in his black little pants here) nor are they the ones with objectively the most worrying abilities (sorry, Mr. Mime. And yep, you too, Malamar), no. These are just the spookiest out there — those who embody all things Halloween making them, yes, pretty scary, but also a little cute.

Feature: Super Nintendo Bros. – The Best (And Worst) Nintendo Siblings

It’s all relative.

It’s New Proper Platforming Mario Game Week, everyone! While the launch of a game with Mario in the title is a fairly regular occurrence, the release of the plumber’s first all-new 2D platformer in over a decade is cause for special celebration. Super Mario Bros. Wonder brings back Mario and his Mushroom Kingdom brethren in a mainline series entry that we deem to be “the slickest, sharpest, and smartest that two-dimensional Mario has felt since 1991” in our review.

And it’s Super Mario Bros. Wonder, remember — Nintendo’s most famous sibling is right there and playable from the start, as he should be. In honour of this evergreen fraternal relationship, today we’re looking back at all the other sibling relationships and rivalries in the Nintendo canon. The Mario brothers may be the most famous, but they’re far from the only ones!
