Ex-PlayStation Boss Questions Future Of Consoles, But Not Nintendo Hardware

“They live in their Own Private Idaho”.

As the video game market continues to evolve there’s once again talk about the viability of console gaming. In the same interview with Eurogamer, ex-PlayStation boss Shawn Layden shared his thoughts about this topic.

While he has raised alarm about the whole “Xbox versus PlayStation” console market and believes it’s important to question the purpose of these systems going forward, in terms of Nintendo’s future, he doesn’t appear to be quite as concerned. As he mentions, Nintendo operates within its “Own Private Idaho” nowadays:

To the British people reading this, yes, okay, stop chuckling in the back. The game’s name actually derives from わんこ Wan ko, which is an informal or cute way of saying dog or puppy in Japanese. Kids use it a lot. And come on, the puppy in this game is pretty darn cute.

Talking Point: Can Sony And Microsoft Really Compete With Nintendo In A New ‘Handheld War’?

Come at the king, you best not miss.

It’s safe to say that, 146 million sales later, Nintendo’s risk of launching a dockable handheld console in 2017 has paid off handsomely. After all, Sony’s PS Vita was all but dead by that point, and despite the 3DS managing to reverse its fortunes after a swift price drop in its first year, many claimed that the rise of mobile gaming would spell the end of handheld consoles.

Yet the Switch proved the naysayers wrong and, if anything, ignited a renewed interest in handhelds the likes of which we haven’t seen in years. Mobile gaming has fallen by the wayside (somewhat – though Nintendo properties have also dipped their toes in the water here), and, we now have a bevvy of powerful handheld consoles to choose from, including the Steam Deck, the Asus ROG Ally X, the Lenovo Legion Go, and many more. Yet despite the growing competition, the Switch has comfortably maintained its position as the king of handheld gaming in 2024.

The last line of defense.

The upcoming tactical RPG is from Too Kyo Games, the development studio formed by the Danganronpa and Zero Escape creators Kazutaka Kodaka and Kotaro Uchikoshi. And while it features other familiar names to Danganronpa fans — series artist Rui Komatsuzaki and composer Masafumi Takada return after reuniting with Kodaka on Master Detective Archives: Rain Code — there are a few new wrinkles that make this pretty different from the pair’s previous games.

Nintendo Left Sony “Standing At The Altar” With SNES Disk Add-On, Says Former PlayStation Exec

PauseStation.

Those with an appetite for Nintendo history likely will have heard of the ‘SNES PlayStation‘ — a collaboration between Nintendo and Sony which was intended to bring CD-ROM gaming to the former’s latest console.

The partnership never materialised, naturally, with Nintendo announcing that it was pivoting to work with Phillips at the very same event that Sony would unveil the console. Yikes. It’s one of the most notorious double crosses in gaming history, and now, in celebration of the PlayStation’s 30th birthday, former Sony executive Shawn Layden has shared what the jilting felt like from the other side.

Sea Of Stars Dev Points To Nintendo As Its Biggest Source Of Inspiration

You go, Garl.

Sea of Stars launched on Nintendo Switch last year and, after a beefy free update and with an even beefier free DLC on the horizon, it’s safe to say that it’s a banger. But what inspired the developer, Sabotage, to make such a gem? What studios sit on its mood board? Who is the go-to touchstone for all things game-making? According to Sea of Stars director Thierry Boulanger, it’s Nintendo.

Now, we challenge any dev to look us in the eye and say that they haven’t, in some way, been inspired by the House of Mario over the years. But, as Boulanger told GamesRadar, the Big N is “just the motherlode of everything you can learn”, with the studio’s work in the 1980s and ’90s being particular points of inspiration for the Sabotage team.
