Nintendo Announces Emio – the Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club a Week After Eerie Teaser Trailer

Last week, Nintendo puzzled fans by uploading an unsettling and cryptic teaser trailer for an unannounced game. We no longer have to wonder what this game is, as the company revealed today that it is the latest entry in the Famicom Detective Club series, due out on August 29 for Nintendo Switch.

In a new video published on YouTube, Famicom Detective Club lead scenario writer and series creator Yoshio Sakamoto revealed he is the producer for the latest entry in the franchise in 30 years: Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club. Sakamoto revealed that while the team was remaking the first two games, The Missing Heir and The Girl Who Stands Behind, he felt Nintendo needed to continue the series beyond just those two entries.

“This is the first new Famicom Detective Club game in 30 years, and I was involved in everything,” Sakamoto explained. “[F]rom the foundations of the plot to small details of the script and cutscenes.”

In Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club, players control an assistant private investigator who is looking into the murder of a student who fell victim to Emio, the Smiling Man, according to the product listing on Nintendo’s official website. In addition to a brand-new story, Ayumi Tachibana, the protagonist from The Missing Heir, returns as a playable character in certain sections of the game.

Emio – The Smiling Man is the first new Famicom Detective Club game in over three decades, and follows the Switch remakes of the Famicom Detective Club: The Missing Heir and The Girl Who Stands Behind, both of which were announced and released in 2021 on Nintendo’s hybrid gaming console.

Hello Games Bringing Light No Fire Tech ‘Back From the Future’ for No Man’s Sky’s Worlds Part 1 Update, Sean Murray Says

Hello Games has revealed the next update for No Man’s Sky: Worlds Part 1.

This huge update for the now eight year old space game is its biggest since 2020’s Origins update and focuses on much-requested variety and major visual enhancements to the universe. These include fancy new water effects and even what looks like gameplay inspired by Helldivers 2’s community driven Galactic War.

In a new developer video, below, Hello Games’ development chief Sean Murray made a rare appearance to discuss the Worlds Part 1 update. Murray said the tech Hello Games has developed for its upcoming new game, Light No Fire, is now being incorporated into No Man’s Sky.

“Six months ago we announced Light No Fire,” Murray said. “It’s this crazy ambitious game and we’ve been working on it for years, and we’ve learnt so many things and it feels like we’re almost bringing this technology back from the future.”

On Worlds Part 1, Murray said Hello Games has completely refreshed the universe with new technology, new flora, new fauna, and new gameplay. “In No Man’s Sky what you see on screen is generated by the computer and we’re achieving a level of variety that just wasn’t possible before,” he said.

The English studio has developed new water technology that can create waves and reflections to make No Man’s Sky’s ocean planets “feel completely new.” Ships can now land on water, planets have wind patterns, and the waves are dynamic and react to the weather.

“Sometimes a storm hits and, you know, the waves rise, the clouds gather, you’ve got the atmospherics, the wind, all this technology comes together all at once and there’s nothing like it,” Murray said.

New surface volumetrics include rolling fog, rain, blizzards, and even sparks coming up from lava. There are new creatures across the new biomes, too.

Worlds Part 1 brings with it a new Expedition. Expeditions are timed events in which you embark on galactic trips from one specific point in the galaxy to another. They encompass several challenges and achievements exclusive to each named Expedition.

Murray said the new Expedition is inspired by Paul Verhoeven’s cult classic science fiction war movie Starship Troopers and is “something really different.” It takes players on a tour of new planets, with everyone battling together. Progress, Murray said, is community driven, with new “super cool” rewards. It sounds a bit like the Galactic War in Arrowhead’s smash hit co-op third-person shooter Helldivers 2, itself heavily inspired by Starship Troopers.

And finally, Murray teased there’s more to come from No Man’s Sky. “The update is called Worlds Part I because, I guess… there’s much more to come.”

No Man’s Sky launched in 2016 initially for PC and PlayStation 4 before coming out on Xbox One in 2018, and PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S in 2020. A Nintendo Switch version followed in 2022. Over the years, Hello Games has issued a long list of major updates, most recently Adrift.

Indeed, it’s a busy time for Hello Games, which alongside updates for No Man’s Sky is working on its next game, Light No Fire. It’s about adventure, building, survival and exploration together, set on a fantasy planet the size of Earth.

Baldur’s Gate 3 Patch 7 May Finally Add Everyone’s Favorite Bard to the Party

Larian Studios may finally be adding everyone’s favorite bard Alfira to the Baldur’s Gate 3 party upon the release of Patch 7 in September 2024.

Though not wholly confirmed, the patch notes released July 16 said Larian “may have also let a certain bard now join the party as a controllable character if there’s an empty slot, temporarily, of course.”

Fans have been calling upon the studio to make Alfira a recruitable companion since Baldur’s Gate 3’s launch in August 2023 but this tease has reignited the chatter. “OMG, Alfira!?,” asked TitanMK0 on Reddit.

A tiefling bard encountered during Act 1 of Baldur’s Gate 3, Alfira tasks the party with helping her compose a song. She may be briefly involved later in the story, including in one particularly dark quest, but doesn’t play a huge role in the overall plot.

She became a fan favorite despite this, and as reported by Dexerto, players are already plotting how to keep her in the party for good despite Larian’s warning the bard will only be available “temporarily.”

As has been the case with other characters, “I’m giving it three days before glitchers figure out how to keep her in the party permanently,” KingdomOfZeal said on Reddit. “Larian may as well add dialogue and quests for her.”

Even if they can’t, Bucket_Of_Magic notes her addition is “prime real estate for mods,” because if Larian adds her as a playable character it has “already laid the foundation.”

While mods would normally be great news for PC players and a harsh reality for those on console, Larian is emitting this divide with Patch 7’s headline feature: official mod support on all platforms.

No specific release date beyond “September 2024” has been shared for the update, potentially Baldur’s Gate 3’s final major patch, but the studio will likely share it soon. Once all is said and done, however, Larian is leaving behind the game, franchise, and Dungeons & Dragons altogether to create something new.

In our 10/10 review of the game, IGN said: “With crunchy, tactical RPG combat, a memorable story with complex characters, highly polished cinematic presentation, and a world that always rewards exploration and creativity, Baldur’s Gate 3 is the new high-water mark for CRPGs.”

Best PS5 Deals for Prime Day: Huge Discounts on Games, SSDs, and More

Prime Day ends today, so act fast to secure everything PlayStation at discount prices. The sale runs from July 16-17, with different deals on day two that you won’t want to miss. There are huge offers on the best SSDs for PS5, the latest PS5 exclusives, controllers, headsets, monitors, and more. To take advantage of these deals, you need to be a Prime member—consider signing up for a 30-day free trial before the sale ends today.

TL;DR: Prime Day Best PS5 Deals

SSD for PS5 Prime Day Deals

PS5 games are getting bigger every year, with titles like Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 rumored to require around 300GB of storage for all its content—multiplayer, zombies, campaign, and Warzone. This could take up half of your PS5’s base storage, depending on your model. To avoid constantly installing and uninstalling games, take advantage of SSD deals during Prime Day.

SSD prices have been rising in 2024, making now the perfect time to buy with significant discounts available. Today only, you can get a Samsung 990 Pro 2TB SSD with a pre-installed heatsink for 45% off. If you need a heatsink, we recommend pairing your SSD with this one and following our install guide. You’ll never have to worry about storage space again. There are plenty more great options in the sale as well, so don’t miss out

PS5 Games On Sale for Prime Day

I’m personally looking for even more games to play on my PS5 going into the second half of the year, so I’ve tracked down the best deals on PlayStation games for Prime Day. There are some great offers up for grabs as well, with my personal favorites including Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Elden Ring, Persona 3 Reload, Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance, and God of War: Ragnarok all getting big price cuts for the shopping event.

Best Monitor for PS5 Prime Day Deals

Gaming monitors have advanced significantly in recent years, offering more options at more affordable prices. Prime Day is the perfect time to save on some of the best monitors for PS5 and complete or upgrade your setup. One of the best deals is the AOC Agon PRO AG324UX 32” Gaming Monitor, now just $499 during the Prime Day sale.

This 32-inch monitor boasts HDMI 2.1 ports, 4K resolution, and a 144Hz refresh rate with a 1ms response time, making it perfect for PS5 and a great investment at this price. If you’re content with 1440p instead of 4K, the 27-inch version is also discounted to $249.99, offering another huge discount.

Best PlayStation Portal Accessory Prime Day Deals

The PlayStation Portal is essentially a DualSense controller with an 8-inch LCD screen in the middle. It allows you to stream games from your PS5 at up to 60fps with a 1080p resolution, providing a sharp display given the screen size. This device lets you play your PS5 games from anywhere in your home, or even away from home if you have a solid internet connection. If you’ve already secured one in 2024, here are some great accessories to consider.

Best Headset for PS5 Prime Day Deals

Big news, my pick of the best PS5 headsets is on sale for Prime Day 2024. SteelSeries Arctis Nova 7P Wireless is down to just $134.99 in the sale, a significant drop from its $179.99 list price. While there are plenty of gaming headset deals for Prime Day this year, I personally love this headset and use it at home during every multiplayer session on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, or just when chatting over Discord.

It features a fabulous out-of-the-box audio setup and an extremely generous battery life which is good for lazy gamers like myself. With top tier audio quality and comfort without an eye-watering price tag, this is the best wireless gaming headset to buy during the Prime Day sales. It got a 9/10 IGN, with reviewer Matt Adler stating: “Simultaneous Bluetooth audio, improved battery life, and a lighter design make the SteelSeries Arctis Nova 7 the midrange headset to beat.”

Racing Wheel for PS5 Prime Day Deals

The best racing wheels for PS5 put you right in the driver’s seat for games like Gran Turismo 7 and F1 24. Sure, a PS5 controller gets the job done, but there’s nothing like the exhilarating rumble of a racing wheel to make you feel like you’re tearing up the track. Get ready for an immersive, heart-pounding experience as you burn rubber on the virtual asphalt.

Best PS5 Controller Deals for Prime Day

Let me get the bad news out the way first, DualSense controllers are not on sale for Prime Day this year. I know, it’s disappointing, especially when we’ve seen a reasonable offer on the controllers pretty consistently during the Prime Day sales over the past few years. But, that doesn’t mean there isn’t anything to discuss. Backbone One Mobile Gaming Controller is down to $69.99 for Prime Day. That’s a $30 discount for Prime members, and well worth considering if you want to play PS5 games handheld via streaming but don’t want to shell out for the PlayStation Portal.

Is It Better to Buy a New Console on Prime Day or Black Friday?

Prime Day often lacks the punchy console deals that we often see during long Black Friday sales. For example, last year saw the launch of the PS5 Slim which Sony quickly bundled with Spider-Man 2 or Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and knocked $50 off the list price.

That was the most popular deal of Black Friday, and a good indicator that it’s worth waiting on a decent console deal. It’s also worth keeping in mind potential mid-gen refreshes like the PS5 Pro, which could usher in bundle deals or price drops for every other PS5 when it launches. There’s lots to consider, but for now I think it’s safe to say it’s better waiting for Black Friday to buy a console.

Should You Wait For the PS5 Pro?

PS5 Pro feels like it’s been officially announced, but in reality it’s currently heavily rumored. Earlier this year nalysts reported to CNBC it’s anticipated Sony will release a ‘Pro’ variant of the PS5 in the latter half of 2024. Insider Gaming also reported that the PS5 Pro is “aiming for a tentative holiday 2024 release.” So should you wait for the PS5 Pro before buying anything?

If you’re waiting on buying a PS5 console in general, possibly; if you’re willing to spend a rumored ~$600 on a video game console. Otherwise, the standard PS5 will do you just fine and all of the deals we’ve mentioned in this article will work for both iterations of the console, so there’s no need to wait for the next mid-gen refresh. Should you wait for the PS6? Also no.

What Are Must-Have Accessories for the PS5?

PS5 has a slew of interesting accessory options, but the must-haves are dependant on your playstyle. If you’re a single player guru who sticks to 200 hour Elden Ring playthroughs, then it’s unlikely you want a top of the line gaming headset for comms on Warzone. But, if multiplayer is more your vibe, then by all means shell out $100+ for the best headset possible. Personally, an SSD is the must-have accessory for PS5, as it’ll relieve so must stress and time in the longrun, especially with how big games are getting. Otherwise, my next best suggestion is a premium controller like the Razer Wolverine V2 Pro or DualSense Edge, but only if they’re on sale.

What Is Amazon Prime Day?

Prime Day is a great opportunity to save some serious cash on your favorite hobbies, at least in my view. The annual summer sale features discounts on thousands of items, with new lightning deals every hour that you won’t want to miss.

As one of the biggest sales events outside of Black Friday, it attracts many companies, including those outside of Amazon, offering exclusive discounts available only on Prime Day. If you’re already a Prime member, you can access the sale without much bother. But, there’s also a free 30-day trial if you’re intrigued and just want to check out some of the new discounts.

Prime Day is absolutely one of the best times to buy physical video games, and although you might not find discounts on a new PS5, there are still plenty of deals to check out. Some of my favorite Nintendo Switch games are on sale, and if you’d ever consider PlayStation’s rival, there are some great Prime Day Xbox deals. Amazon is even offering a “no console required” Xbox streaming bundle.

Best Buy Has the Best Xbox Series X Deal for Prime Day

The Xbox Series X is the premier Xbox console on the market right now. With 4K resolution, 120fps support, and instant loading thanks to a speedy SSD, every game is a joy to play on Xbox Series X. Alongside the numerous features for home entertainment, the Series X can easily be the perfect home console for any gamer. It’s a major upgrade over the Xbox Series S, which is only capable of 1440p output on select titles.

Now’s as good a chance as any to pick up a new Xbox with Amazon Prime Day running through Wednesday night and other retailers with their own competing sales. As part of Best Buy’s Black Friday in July sale, you can save $50 off a new Xbox Series X console. Not only that, but you will also get a free $50 Best Buy gift card with your purchase, which you can use to score a new game or controller.

Xbox Series X + $50 Best Buy Gift Card for $449

Immediately upon purchase, the gift card will be emailed to you alongside your receipt. Since Best Buy’s sale is open to everyone, you won’t need to be a My Best Buy member to score this gift card.

The Xbox Series X is a great console overall for any game you’d like to play. With Game Pass Ultimate – grab a three-month subscription for 43% off for Prime Day – you can even stream games over the cloud and pick up where you left off, even if you’re not home.

What We Said In Our Review

Xbox Series X is an excellent console that offers the most power available in the console space currently. In our review, we said the following about the Series X: “No matter what current games you throw at it, your loading times will be drastically cut, your framerates will be smoother, and your resolutions will be higher. This bold and minimalistically designed box is quiet, compact for both the power it packs and especially how it compares to the PS5, capable, and loaded with convenience features like instantly resuming and cycling between any of your recently played games.”

Is It Worth Buying At This Price?

If you are currently a Game Pass subscriber or plan to subscribe to the service, Xbox Series X is a great choice. You’ll get hundreds of games instantly to play through, with the best performance available in the Xbox ecosystem. Plus, with the 4K Disc drive, you can play any 4K Blu-rays with ease.

However, if you’re in no rush to purchase a new console, you’ll likely find far better deals later in the year for Black Friday, especially as Xbox plans to release three new console variants. It’s likely that the current Xbox Series X will be discounted alongside these releases to push more Xbox consoles into the market.

The Terminator 6-Film Blu-Ray Collection Is Under $25 for Prime Day

For Prime Day, Amazon is discounting a six-movie collection of the Terminator series: an epic, sci-fi saga that details a grim future for humans. When our aspirations get bigger than our morality, humankind creates a machine that decides humans should no longer exist. How do we battle this? By going back in time to make sure it never happens at all.

44% off Terminator 6-Film Collection [Blu-Ray]

Terminator has been a staple in the Sci-Fi genre since its explosion on the big screen in 1984 as a Sci-Fi horror, all the way through to its most recent additions. Though there are only 6 feature-length Terminator films, there was also the hit TV series The Sarah Connor Chronicles, and a brand new Netflix anime series coming out this year to catch up on. Check out our reviews of the 6 films below:

Where to Stream Online

Below you will find links to stream almost all 6 Terminator movies online. For the moment, 5 of the Terminator movies are available to stream on various platforms online. Some of those streaming platforms are fuboTV, Peacock TV, Prime Video, Paramount+, Max, MGM+, Roku, Tubi, and TBS. 5 of the Terminator movies (excluding Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines) are also available to rent or buy on Amazon or YouTube.

Best Order to Watch in

Since there is an element of time travel included in the canon of the Terminator movie series, the events can become a bit muddled; that’s why watching them in order of release date is probably fine to do with this series. For more detailed information on how to watch the Terminator movies in order, check out our article.

  1. The Terminator (1984)
  2. Terminator 2: Judgement Day (1991)
  3. Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003)
  4. Terminator Salvation (2009)
  5. Terminator Genisys (2015)
  6. Terminator: Dark Fate (2019)

Walmart Still Has the Best Nintendo Switch Lite Prime Day Deal, Not Amazon

During Prime Day 2024, the best Switch Lite deal isn’t on Amazon. Walmart is offering the Nintendo Switch Lite (Timmy’s and Tommy’s Aloha Edition) console for only $159. It normally retails for $199, which was already a great deal because it included the full Animal Crossing: New Horizons game. This special edition Switch Lite was originally part of Walmart’s larger sale that competed with Amazon Prime Day. That sale has now ended, but this deal is one of few that are still available, and we’re pretty certain Amazon won’t match it.

Nintendo Switch Lite with Animal Crossing for $159

The Switch Lite retails for $100 less than the original Switch and $150 less than the Switch OLED. It is compatible with most Nintendo Switch games and it runs off the same hardware, so performance is identical. The three main tradeoffs of the Switch Lite is that (1) the controllers are not detachable, (2) the console can’t be docked and played on a TV and (3) the display is smaller (5.5″ vs 6.2″ on Switch and 7″ on Switch OLED).

If you were intending to use the Switch solely as a handheld console, you might be better off just getting the Switch Lite. Even though the controls aren’t detachable, the Switch Lite does support wireless Bluetooth, so you can always purchase another pair of Joy-Cons, a Switch Pro controller, or a compatible third party wireless Switch controller, and you can still play untethered.

If you enjoy cozy games like Stardew Valley, Harvest Moon, or Minecraft, you’ll probably love Animal Crossing. It’s obvious that Nintendo put in a lot of love into this first party title and it’s certainly one of the best – and most relaxing – games for the Nintendo Switch. This is an excellent pick for gamers of all ages, even children. Check out our glowing IGN review for more details.

We Found the Best Xbox Deals for Prime Day 2024

Amazon’s major annual sale, Prime Day, is running right now. That means you can save a ton of cash on all sorts of items, ranging from furniture to Fritos. Among the deals are a whole lot of discounts on all things Xbox. We’re talking a great deal on a refurbished Xbox Series X, as well as great sales on controllers and games.

Xbox is in a somewhat weird spot lately. While Microsoft owns heavy-hitting game publishers like Bethesda and Activision (the maker of Call of Duty!) its hardware is trailing far behind both PS5 and Nintendo Switch (to say nothing of the Switch successor). But Microsoft isn’t resting on its laurels. It’s making big moves, like letting people play Xbox without an Xbox. And more and more of its attention seems to be on Xbox Game Pass going forward. Still, these deals are worth taking a look at.

Xbox Series X (Renewed) for $369.99

It’s not brand-new, but it’s close, and it costs way less than a new Xbox Series X typically does. Amazon has “renewed” Xbox consoles (refurbished, but in “excellent” condition) on sale for $369.99. That’s $130 less than they cost new. And despite Xbox Series X|S sales lagging behind PS5, I actually prefer my Series X over my PS5 for cross-platform games. Trust me, the “quick resume” feature is a game changer.

New Xbox Series X + $50 Best Buy Gift Card for $449.99

If you’d prefer a deal on a brand-new Xbox, Amazon has nothing for you – but Best Buy does. You can get a new Xbox Series X, plus a $50 Best Buy gift card, all for $50 less than the typical MSRP of the Xbox alone. That’s a pretty great deal – and you don’t even need a Prime membership to take advantage of it.

Free $7.50 Amazon Credit With 3 Months Xbox Game Pass Ultimate

Xbox Game Pass Ultimate just got a price hike – at least it did if you buy it directly from Microsoft. Thankfully Amazon hasn’t gotten the memo yet, and is still charging $49.99 for a three-month membership. But if you’re a Prime member, you can get a free $7.50 credit to your Amazon account if you buy during Prime Day. Just do it.

WD_Black 1TB C50 Expansion Card for $118

It’s no secret that modern AAA video games take up a whole lot of storage space. They take up so much that you’ve probably already reached the limit of your Xbox Series X|S’s onboard storage. Expanding that storage is easy, but it’s usually absurdly expensive, thanks to Microsoft’s proprietary format. This all-time low price is the best you’re likely to get anytime soon, so stock up. If you prefer the Seagate one, it’s on sale too, but for $5 more.

Xbox Controller for $44.99

Ready to add player two? Pick up a wireless Xbox controller, on sale for as low as $44.99. Various colors are also discounted, so pick your favorite and run with it. The Core Controller, which we consider the best Xbox controller, period, also works on PC, Mac, iOS devices, and more, so it’s quite versatile.

2TB Seagate Game Drive for $74.99

External hard drives aren’t quite as useful as the expansion cards above, but they’re way cheaper. This 2TB Seagate Game Drive was designed for Xbox, and it holds a boatload of games. The only drawback is that you can’t play games that are optimized for Series X|S from the drive. But you play non-optimized games (Xbox One games, for instance) from it, and you can download optimized games to it for storage and quick transfer to internal storage when you want to play them.

Xbox Game Deals

Frankly, there aren’t as many Prime Day Xbox game deals as I would have expected. The above games are all that appear to be on sale. If more discounts go live in the future, this is where we’ll put them. Owners of Xbox’s rival consoles can also check at our lists of the best Prime Day deals for PS5 games and Switch games.

Super Monkey Ball Banana Rumble 1.10 Patch Fixes Sonic’s Ball Among Other Updates

Super Monkey Ball Banana Rumble update version 1.10 patch notes are here and come with a bundle of new content additions and fixes.

The Super Monkey Ball X/Twitter account shared the changes coming to the arcade platformer, detailing a host of tweaks that help keep the game’s post-launch support rolling. Most notably, there’s a new Race stage called Sky Highway as well as a few stability improvements across the experience. The Sega game also brings some love to Sonic, who has been given a stat boost “to better showcase his unique character traits.” The character’s ball now shows the correct blue color, too.

A few small adjustments have also been made to the terrain across the Race stages in Battle as well as the Acrobatics stage in Adventure. Players should also notice some control adjustments that should make moving your monkeys around a bit easier.

Super Monkey Ball Banana Rumble launched June 25 for Nintendo Switch and brings customization options, new courses, and more to Sega’s ball-rolling franchise. Sonic is one of a few Sonic cameo characters players can enjoy as DLC, with others, like Tails, Knuckles, and, Amy, set rollout in the future. Other Sega faces, like Jet Set Radio’s Beat and Crazy Taxi’s Axel, are also on the way. They can be purchased individually or together as a bundle as part of the Sega Bundle.

We peeled back the layers on Super Monkey Ball Banana Rumble and found a lot to love. In our 8/10 review, we said, “Super Monkey Ball Banana Rumble is a brilliant return to form with the best stages and controls the series has seen in over 20 years.”
