20 Most Popular Android Games to Play Right Now (May 2023)

One of the advantages of owning an Android smartphone or tablet is a larger selection of mobile games available—compared to the Apple iPhone. Google isn’t as restrictive as Apple with the types of apps and games that you can download, so you’ll always have a wider range of gaming experiences.

However, there are millions upon millions of apps available to play on the Google Play Store, so it may be intimidating to find a good place to start. That’s where we come in.

Jump to:

We rounded up the top 10 free and the top 10 paid games (20 in total) for your Android mobile device. So whether you like simple, yet challenging puzzle games, in-depth strategy MMO (massive multiplayer online) games, or just looking for something fun to play every once and a while, you’ll find a great selection of games worth playing, below:

TL;DR – These are the most popular Android games

Free Android Games

Paid Android Games

Most Popular Free Games

1. Monopoly Go!

Monopoly Go! is one of the most popular games on Android for a few reasons, it’s a classic that’s easy to play, quick to learn, and just flat out fun. This is the “Go!” version of the board game, which is faster-paced and more ruthless—instead of just bankrupting your opponents, you also have to destroy their properties in this take-no-prisoners mobile game.

2. 2248 – Number Puzzle Game

The app 2248 – Number Puzzle Game is easy to pick up and learn, but difficult to master. This is a swipe-and-match puzzle game where you match and merge identical numbers to clear a level.

For example: If you match four blocks of the number two, then four blocks merge into one number eight block, and then you try to match that with other number eight blocks around it, and so on and so on in sequence. The more you match and merge, then the more you can clear levels.

3. Roblox

Roblox is the ultimate online community! This is an app that combines games and social media where you can create your own games and experiences, discover other player-created games, and build just about anything they can imagine. It’s also a virtual space where you can meet and chat with others.

4. Royal Match

Save the kingdom! Royal Match is a match-three puzzle game where you match royal items to clear levels to save King Robert. Once you clear a level, you get coins to upgrade, decorate, and rebuild your kingdom.

The faster you swallow, the bigger the hole gets to suck up more and more. Between each level, you have to use the ammo and weapons you collected to take down the big boss. If you take him down, you get more points and coins for upgrades and extended time to clear the next level.

6. Hide and Go Seek: Monster Hunt

Hide and Go Seek: Monster Hunt is a simple game of hide-and-seek with a group of friends, only you’re placed into a room and then transformed into an item that belongs to that specific room—like a roll of toilet paper in a bathroom. The object of the game is to stay hidden in plain sight, as a large orange monster tries to find and eat you.

7. Camo Sniper

The enemy is elusive and clever, so if you want to be the best, you have to track ‘em down and shoot ‘em. Camo Sniper is a first-person shooter game where you survey the land looking for enemy soldiers through a sniper scope. However, soldiers are designed to seamlessly blend into the background. You have to have a keen eye and steady trigger finger to win this game.

8. Block Blast Adventure Master

Block Blast Adventure Master is a puzzle game that’s a mix between a traditional block game and a grid game. Just place the blocks in the square to create a solid line. Once a line is created, it disappears to make room for more blocks. Think of it as a drag-and-drop version of Tetris without the falling blocks.

9. Honkai: Star Rail

From game developer HoYoverse, Honkai: Star Rail is a space fantasy turn-based RPG (role-playing game) that features a journey across the galaxy aboard the Astral Express, as you travel to distant planets and meet new companions to stop the evil and corrupting “Fragmentum.”

You can use an army of hero monkeys, structures, towers, bridges, and other devices to prevent balloon-like “Bloons” from traveling from one side of the map to the other. The more Bloons you pop, the more coins you make for upgrades, extra lives, and more.

3. Monopoly – Classic Board Game ($4)

Play the classic board game Monopoly on your Android smartphone or tablet for $4. You can play as the classic game tokens—such as the car, top hat, battleship, and others—as you travel around the board buying up properties, building houses and hotels, and collecting rent via Monopoly Money. The object of the game is to bankrupt everyone, so you’re the sole winner with most of the money and properties.

7. Stardew Valley ($5)

Set in Pelican Town, you inherit a small house and a plot of land from your grandfather. You’re then tasked with clearing the land to grow a farm that’s full of all sorts of livestock and crops. 9. Papers, Please ($5)

At $5, Papers, Please is a puzzle simulation game and takes place in a border town called Grestin after a six-year long war between two fictional European countries, the Communist Arstotzka and neighboring Kolechia. Think of it as East Germany and West Germany post-World War II.

What to Look for in Android Games

The Google Play Store is the primary place where Android users find and download games with nearly four million apps available. It may sound daunting to search for games, but Google’s most popular free and paid games lists are a good place to start. Here’s what to look for in Android games.

The first thing you should do is check to see if the mobile game you want to play is compatible with your Android device. Most apps in the Google Play Store require that your smartphone is running, at least, Android version 4.4 KitKat—which was released in October 2013. Older mobile devices might not be able to run most modern games.

You should also consider how much storage space is available on your device. While some games have small file sizes of only a few hundred megabytes, there are others that have very large file sizes of up to 20GB. Luckily, there are Android devices that are designed with an expansion card slot built-in. If you run out of space, you can always pop in a microSD card to add extra storage. But if your device doesn’t have an expansion slot, then you’ll have to delete a few apps, photos, or videos to free up some space or get a new smartphone with a larger capacity altogether.

Meanwhile, when it comes to price, the Google Play Store divides games into two categories: Free-to-play and paid. And while free-to-play sounds self-explanatory, it doesn’t mean these games are completely free. Free versions of games might have commercial breaks or some limitations to gameplay, while in-app purchases can upgrade or remove restrictions. For example: Cooking Craze: Restaurant Game includes in-app purchases for additional items and bundles, but purchases are not required to play this game.

Additionally, most paid games download to your Android device completely unlocked. But, it might also include in-app purchases for upgrades. For example: Monopoly has in-app purchases to unlock special editions of the game. There’s also a gaming subscription called Google Play Pass for Android users. Games available for the service include zero ads and in-app purchases, so you’re free to play without restrictions for $5/mo.

Finally, the most important thing about picking an Android game is if it’s fun to play. Whether you’re going to spend a few minutes or hours upon hours playing it on your smartphone or tablet, games have to look like a fun and immersive challenge to conquer.

Valve’s Steam Deck Latest Device to be Targeted by Company Known for Patent Lawsuits

Immersion Corporation has filed a lawsuit against Valve over rumble haptic technology found in the Steam Deck and Valve Index, The Verge reports.

The outlet notes that Immersion filed its complaint in the Western District of Washington, citing seven patents dating back to as early as 2002. The company is accusing Valve of infringing its own patents in the company’s hardware devices, the Steam Deck and Valve Index. Though the complaint also cites several video games that use the technology, including Half-Life: Alyx, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor.

Immersion has a history of suing companies it claims have infringed on its rumble tech patents. Both Microsft and Sony have been in legal bouts with Immersion before over the rumble technology, with both companies licensing tech from Immersion’s patent portfolio. Immersion is also suing Meta over the same accusations of patent infringement, with the lawsuit filed nearly a year ago.

Immersion seeks damages, royalties, plus an injunction against Valve “from deploying, operating, maintaining, testing, and using the Accused Handheld Instrumentalities and Accused VR Instrumentalities.”

In our review of the Steam Deck, we noted that although there we some “major caveats,” such as a noisy fan and long loading times, we still recommend the device.

Take-Two Boss Supportive of Microsoft-Activision Deal: ‘What’s Good for Them Is Good for the Industry’

As Microsoft continues in its efforts to acquire Activision Blizzard and multiple regulators make their decisions on the deal, several publishers have now publicly voiced their thoughts on the situation. Among them, Take-Two Interactive, whose CEO voiced support for the acquisition today in conversation with IGN.

When asked for his thoughts on the deal, CEO Strauss Zelnick expressed that Take-Two had supported the deal for some time, saying that it would be a positive for the company’s partner, Microsoft: “What’s good for them is also good for the industry.”

When the CMA’s recent ruling against the deal on the basis that it could cause a potential Microsoft takeover of the cloud gaming market, Zelnick reiterated past comments he had made about the technology, saying that cloud gaming is a distribution method, not a separate business. was brought up. And while new distribution methods such as cloud gaming might expand the gaming market, it’s all still fundamentally a part of the larger gaming market.

“I think it’s important never to confuse a distribution technology with a business model,” Zelnick said. “I would love to believe that streaming our titles would massively expand the marketplace. I’m not sure there’s any reason to believe that.”

Previously, EA CEO Andrew Wilson said that the deal’s completion or termination was “not really material” to his company. Other companies such as Nvidia have already expressed support thanks to Microsoft’s ten-year deals with them for Call of Duty access, though Sony remains vehemently opposed.

Also as a part of today’s earnings, we got a glimpse of the publisher’s release slate for the coming year, learned that it’s cancelled multiple unannounced games, and saw some enormous future business projections that have us suspicious GTA 6 may be imminent.

Take-Two’s Coming Year Includes 16 Games, Including a ‘New IP’ From a ‘Premier Studio’

Publisher Take-Two Interactive is gearing up for some big years on the horizon, with numerous major releases in the tank for 2024 and beyond. But in the meantime, its plans for the current fiscal year aren’t too shabby either: 16 total game releases are expected, including a “new IP” from a “premier studio.”

In the company’s earnings press release today, Take-Two revealed its plans for three “immersive core offerings” between April of this year and March of 2024. Those games include NBA 2K24 and WWE 2K24, but also include “an eagerly-anticipated new IP from one of our premier studios.”

It’s possible this is something totally unknown and unannounced. But there are some already-revealed possibilities as well. It’s entirely possible this is Ken Levine’s new game, Judas, though a table of releases later in the earnings call says this game is “TBA,” possibly ruling it out. A more likely option is the new “multiplayer character-action game” in the works at 31st Union, on the team led by Sledgehammer Games co-founder Michael Condrey. The studio first spun up in 2019, so a release late this year wouldn’t be totally unheard of for the Silicon Valley-based studio.

We asked Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick about our theory ahead of today’s announcement, and he would neither confirm nor deny this, say that Take-Two tends to leave such announcements to the individual development studios.

Take-Two reported record net bookings today for its past fiscal year, reaching $5.3 billion total. It also teased a few massive years to come in fiscal 2025 and 2026, with projections so large we’re starting to suspect that Grand Theft Auto 6 may finally be ready to show its face as early as next year.

Sega Is Considering a Price Increase to $70 in Line With Nintendo, Ubisoft, and Other Publishers

Sega is considering following in the footsteps of Nintendo, Ubisoft, and other publishers and start charging $70 for future titles.

During a financial earnings call held towards the end of April (the translated transcript of which was spotted by VGC yesterday), Sega Sammy CEO Haruki Satomi and CFO Koichi Fukuzawa alluded to the idea of increasing the price of Sega’s upcoming titles when asked why the unit sales price is set higher than usual for the upcoming fiscal year.

“In the global marketplace, AAA game titles for console have been sold at $59.99 for many years, but titles sold at $69.99 have appeared in the last year,” they said. “We would like to review the prices of titles that we believe are commensurate with price increases, while also keeping an eye on market conditions.”

Sega has since released a statement saying that while there are plans to charge $10 more for upcoming games than it has been for the last decade, nothing has been set in stone.

“We are currently considering increasing the prices of some titles, but no concrete decisions have been made at this stage,” the company said.

A $70 game as a baseline is new for Sega, if not unsurprising. Sony, Xbox, Ubisoft, and Take-Two have increased the prices of their games from $60 to $70 in the last year to cope with inflation. The games that have received this high price tag include Gotham Knights, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Hogwarts Legacy, and Nintendo’s latest release, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, a first for the Mario-led company.

Ironically, Sega charged $70 for the Digital Deluxe Edition of Sonic Frontiers, but that’s standard practice for games with bonus content for collectors and enthusiasts. The Standard Edition of the game cost $60. The next Sonic game, whatever it may be, might cost you 10 more Rings.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom – The Wildest Community Creations So Far

From the moment Nintendo revealed The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom’s building mechanics, we knew things were going to get wild. And now, just a handful of days after the sequel’s release, people are already unleashing their creativity in ways that make my vehicles look like preschool building blocks. But hey, that’s what the internet’s for!

Here are some of the craziest, funniest, and cruelest creations Tears of the Kingdom players have come up with so far. Whether they inspire an idea for what you want to build, or just make you wonder, “How the heck did they do that?”, you’ll want to check these out.

Spoiler warning: This article contains videos of enemies, locations, and game mechanics you may not have discovered for yourself in Tears of the Kingdom’s enormous land of Hyrule. If you want to stumble across everything for yourself, turn back now!

Link Goes Full Gundam

It was only a matter of time until someone used all of Tears of the Kingdom’s Zonai technology to create a fully-functioning mech, and TikTok user SoulBanana did just that. The gameplay shows Link using Ascend to reach the pilot controls of a giant mech, before laying waste to a number of Bokoblin camps. This mech is complete with a shield to protect Link from enemies, and two fully decked-out laser arms.

The same player also created a flying mech based around a Zonai wing. This lets Link take to the skies above Hyrule, obliterating flying enemies with laser beams. How people have figured all this stuff out in just a few days is beyond me.

Look Out From Above

Another creative Tears of the Kingdom player created a satellite laser cannon that does all the dirty work for Link while the hero just stands by and watches. In the video below, you can see Link activate the contraption, causing it to immediately take off into the sky and start annihilating a Flame Gleeok. It’s only a matter of seconds before the Gleeok is defeated by this Death Star-like creation.

A Hylian Trojan Horse

These next few creations aren’t quite as complicated as the epic robots seen above, but they’re still a lot of fun to look at. First, a video on TikTok from @videogametrailers_ shows Link using Ascend to hop into a makeshift Trojan Horse. The video is captioned, “Ganondorf won’t know what hit him”, as Link rides inside the horse and eventually slams into a wall.

Tank! Tank! Tank!

Wait… I thought Advance Wars was the Nintendo game with the tanks. Well, Twitter user @idonum has changed Hylian warfare for good with the introduction of the battle tank, which they use to rampage through an enemy base and rip through a Hinox’s health bar. This tank may just be a bunch of wooden planks glued together, but it actually seems to be pretty durable. It’s also pretty tough for enemies to get anywhere near it, as it’s constantly shooting cannonballs from the front.

An Oil Rig Machine

Twitter user @Liz_Caingcoy used Tears of the Kingdom’s building tools to recreate a 20th century oil engine. The video shows this engine being used in a handful of practical ways, like defeating enemies or roasting a fish over a campfire.

Sail Around with a Paddle Boat

The same player also shared their creation of a functioning paddleboat Link was using to sail around the ocean on the edge of Hyrule. It looks pretty funny in motion, as four giant wooden planks power the boat, making a big splash along the way. The paddle boat is a great way to get out on the water for some fishing, or for just taking in that ocean breeze. And yes, the gameplay video is set to the soundtrack of The Wind Waker, which is very fitting.

Reinventing the Wheel

An enormous wheel? Sure, why not. This video has Link tearing through Hyrule on a huge, spinning wheel. He can even ride it through rivers, making it a great choice for covering all types of ground quickly. Link gets into a sticky situation when he gets caught in a tree while a Hinox chases him, forcing him to abandon the contraption.

The Creepiest Stick Figure You’ll Ever See

If you’ve been on social media since Friday, you’ve probably seen some variation of this next creation… Probably a NSFW version, if we’re being honest. This video posted to Reddit shows a giant stick figure made out of wood. He’s got arms, legs, and a face, and is gliding around Hyrule essentially on roller skates. Practical for moment-to-moment gameplay? Maybe not. But it’s absolutely hilarious.

Just a Guy Delivering Timber

Link needs to find Zelda and save Hyrule in Tears of the Kingdom, but some players are ditching those responsibilities in favor of a more peaceful life. On Twitter, @lhcarpenter shared a new career path for Link as a truck driver, saying Link has “a load of timber that needs to be in Butte, Montana by the 18th, or i’m out of a job”. That’s Hyrule slice of life taken to a whole new level.

A Bokoblin Death Trap

These next two creations are a touch on the brutal side. Posted to Reddit by user nintenglo, this first creation shows Link trapping a Bokoblin in a wooden cage, and then proceeding to torch the Bokoblin with Zonai Flame Emitters. Ouch.

Koroks Roasting On an Open Fire

People have been doing awful, terrible things to Tears of the Kingdom’s Koroks thanks to Link’s new Ultrahand power. One such example of this is roasting an entire group of Koroks over an open flame, as they all helplessly panic. Why would you make Link act this way?

Now, You Can Pet the Dog

After a couple brutal creations, we’ll end on something a bit more wholesome. When popular Twitter account @CanYouPetTheDog revealed that you can’t pet the various dogs in Tears of the Kingdom, Good Vibes Gaming’s Jon Cartwright took matters into his own hands. On Twitter, you can check out a picture of Link’s dog-petting machine, which has a Bokoblin Arm outstretched to give the pup the pats it deserves.

You know the most exciting part about all of this? The fact that Tears of the Kingdom is less than a week old. Breath of the Wild stunts and trick shots kept getting better and better throughout the years, and the same is certainly going to happen here. I can’t even imagine what kinds of vehicles, weapons, and contraptions players far more creative than I will be building a week, a month, or a year from now.

While we can’t help you become an expert Tears of the Kingdom engineering wizard, there’s a ton of things we can do for you. Be sure to take a look at our Tears of the Kingdom Walkthrough and Guide about making your way through Hyrule. In fact, you can start here:

Nicolas Cage Is Playing Himself in Dead by Daylight

While we’ll have to wait until July 5 to learn all the details of this surprise announcement, Behaviour Interactive has revealed that the actual Nicolas Cage is coming to Dead by Daylight.

Dead by Daylight’s Twitter confirmed the news, saying, “It’s the performance of a lifetime. Dead by Daylight: Nicolas Cage. Coming to a realm near you. Learn more on July 5th.”

The accompanying video gives us our first look at the actor in the game, and it appears this will be a similar case to The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent where Cage is actually playing himself and not another new character in Dead by Daylight’s universe.

“There is nothing more powerful than imagination,” Nic Cage says in the trailer. “It can shape the fabric of reality… transforming everything you think you may know.”

Behaviour stated we’d learn more about Nicolas Cage, who very well may end up being a new Survivor, on July 5, but there’s a chance he may show up at Dead by Daylight’s 7th Anniversary Stream on May 23 as well.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor Became April’s Best Selling Game in Only 2 Days

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor was the best selling game of April 2023 despite only being available for two days before sales for the month stopped being recorded.

According to the latest figures from Circana (formerly NPD), EA’s long-awaited sequel to 2019’s Jedi: Fallen Order overcame Dead Island 2, PGA Tour, Minecraft Legends, and all other new releases to take the top spot and instantly become the 4th best selling game of 2023 so far.

Dead Island 2 came in second, followed by MLB: The Show 23, Resident Evil 4 Remake, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Hogwarts Legacy, PGA Tour, Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection, FIFA 23, and Mario Kart 8 in tenth.

On the console front, the Nintendo Switch was the best selling console in terms of units sold, but Sony’s PlayStation 5 once again was the best selling hardware platform in dollar sales. Hardware spending overall grew 7% year over year as video game consoles finally find themselves free of component shortages and COVID-19 caused restrictions.

EA is yet to share specific numbers for Jedi: Survivor but the game certainly held the attention of fans, who obsessed over its new froggy character Turgle, winced at the return of Jedi: Fallen Order’s most infamous foe, and enjoyed watching Cal Kestis hang out with Luke Skywalker in a comical advert.

It wasn’t all plain sailing, however, as the game also launched with a complicated day one patch situation and was riddled with technical issues for some users, particularly on PC.
