Why Hitman Developer IO Interactive Should Be Xbox’s Next Target

Danish developer IO Interactive made a name for itself over two decades ago when it released Hitman: Codename 47, the first in a long line of games starring everyone’s favorite sardonic assassin with a barcode tattooed on the back of his bald head. The series has spawned over half a dozen games, two major motion pictures, and lots of commercial success and critical acclaim.

Now, however, with the most recent Hitman game trilogy completed and all folded together under the Hitman: World of Assassination umbrella, IO Interactive is moving on to two other projects: a James Bond 007 game – of which little is known about so far – as well as a new online fantasy-RPG, which looks like it will come after Bond and we know even less about. Hitman, the studio says, is on hiatus for now.

All of this preamble is to set up what I’m about to say, and that is this: Microsoft, if it isn’t already, should be taking a long, hard look at IO Interactive as its next potential acquisition target – regardless of whether or not the Activision-Blizzard deal is approved by regulators, but especially if it isn’t. The fact is, there aren’t a lot of independent AAA game development studios left on the market. Embracer Group bought Gearbox (and a whole bunch of others), Sony took Bungie off the market, Microsoft has spent the past several years acquiring the likes of Obsidian, inXile, and Playground, etc.

To be fair, IO’s prowess outside of Hitman is, for now, relatively unproven. The original Xbox third-person strategy shooter Freedom Fighters was awesome, but that was a long time ago. The two Kane & Lynch games were also a long time ago, and they weren’t awesome. However, the studio seems like the perfect fit for James Bond, and if it works, that could develop into a long-term partnership with the licensor. The online fantasy-RPG is more of a wild card, but it’s so different from anything the studio has ever done that it’s bound to be, at the very least, a project that has creatively energized the IO team.

I’m not sure there’s a better bang-for-your-buck acquisition target out there than IO

As such, I’m not sure there’s a better bang-for-your-buck acquisition target out there than IO. Of course, that’s if they even want to be bought. They were owned by Eidos Interactive (later Square Enix) for many, many years, but the studio eventually negotiated its independence. That it has not only survived but thrived in the years since speaks to a well-managed organization. Microsoft would be wise to snap them up – again, if the studio is even willing to sit down at the negotiating table – and add hundreds of talented developers as well as one proven franchise (in a genre Xbox currently has no presence in), one potentially huge licensed game that could be to Xbox what Goldeneye was to Nintendo, and one fantasy-RPG that, well…OK, I guess Xbox already has plenty of in-house RPG talent. But hey, too much is never enough, right?

No doubt Phil Spencer has already picked up the phone and called IO Interactive at some point, but on the off chance he hasn’t, I certainly hope he will. I’m hard-pressed to think of a more talented studio that’s capable of delivering AAA success that’s not already been gobbled up by some other larger publisher or investment group. I suppose we’ll have to wait and see what happens with the Activision-Blizzard situation first, but after that, I look forward to seeing what Microsoft does next.

Redfall Story Trailer Has Mad Scientists, Massive Vampires, and Lots of Shooting

Arkane Studios has shared the official story trailer for its upcoming co-op shooter Redfall which shares the mad science origins of the game’s vampire apocalypse.

The lengthy three minute trailer (below) opens with an optimistic message from a character called Ava, who says a drop of her blood was promised to “free people from sickness and death”.

This seemingly turned into a dangerous experiment that resulted in her death, however, with the extracted blood not just healing people and granting immortality, but turning them into vampires too. These vampires took over the town of Redfall, which quickly collapsed into a broken society led by gangs of the savage monsters.

Some of the stronger vampires are also introduced in the trailer, suggesting that Redfall will be separated into four areas with vampire leaders at the helm of each. These include The Hollow Man, a winged vampire with protruding organs; Bloody Tom, a massive, muscly vampire; Miss Whisper, who seems to have branch-like growths all over her body; and the Black Sun, suggested to be the most powerful of all.

Various gameplay clips also featured in the trailer, showing how up to four players can take on the town at once to defeat facilities full of the vampires in a ton of creative ways.

Arkane announced earlier in March that Redfall will support cross-play, meaning players can team up regardless of platform, though its barrier to entry is raised in other ways as Redfall will become one of the first Xbox first party games to cost $70 when it launches on May 2.

Kirby’s Dream Land 2 Joins 3 Other Classic Games Coming to Nintendo Switch Online

Kirby’s Dream Land 2 has joined the Nintendo Switch Online collection along with BurgerTime Deluxe, Side Pocket, and Xevious.

Nintendo shared its March 2023 NES, Super NES, and Game Boy Updates for its Nintendo Switch Online subscription service in a YouTube video that turned the spotlight on the new additions, which are available on both the Basic NSO and Expansion Pack tiers.

Players will be able to explore the Rainbow Islands in Kirby’s Dream Land 2 and feast on arcade action in BurgerTime Deluxe, both of which are joining the Game Boy library, while also putting their skills to the test in Side Pocket, now in the SNES collection, and Xevious, in the NES library.

Game Boy and Game Boy Advance games were added to the Nintendo Switch Online subscription service in February, with classic Game Boy games available to those with the Basic NSO subscription, and Game Boy Advance games going to Expansion Pack subscribers.

The Expansion Pack for Nintendo Switch Online caused some controversy when it launched last October with players initially unhappy with the performance of the service, however, the games did play at 60Hz in all territories and more improvements have been made since.

PSA: The Diablo 4 Beta Preload Is Live

Blizzard is allowing Diablo fans to preload the open beta for Diablo IV, which is scheduled to run for three days this weekend. The preload is 84 GB, or 42 GB without the high-resolution texture pack.

To commemorate the open beta, Blizzard has revealed its World Bosses. The company explained in the PS Blog that World Bosses are filled with new, challenging monsters designed for multiple Diablo players to take on regardless of their class or playstyle. The first World Boss that Blizzard has introduced is named Ashava, a gruesome monster with razor-sharp claws elongating from her wrists.

To refresh your memory on who Ashava is, Diablo IV’s senior encounter designer Candace Thomas spoke about her at BlizzCon in 2019. She described Ashava as an ever-present threat in Sanctuary that can pop up anywhere in the world within a moment’s notice, saying she acts “as like a constant reminder that Lilith is watching and nowhere is safe from the gates of Hell.”

“But to us as developers, I think that she’s kind of like a monument to what Diablo IV is as a game,” Thomas added at the time. “She’s this enormous monster, but she takes more than just you to defeat. People have to come together across all the regions to take her down, because she’s just this giant killing machine.”

Ashava will spawn four times over the course of the weekend. Diablo IV’s open beta starts at 9 a.m. PT on Friday, March 17 and ends at 12 p.m. PT on Sunday, March 19.

Diablo IV will be released on June 6, 2023.

Resident Evil 4 Deluxe Edition Skins Fully Revealed, Including Emo Ashley

The Resident Evil series has always embraced its sillier side (look no further for proof than the Chainsaw Controller), and some newly-revealed costumes for Resident Evil 4 remake’s Ashley fit right in.

Thanks to the Resident Evil website‘s preorder page (via Resident Evil Central), we finally know what the two hidden Ashley costumes are for the game’s Digital Deluxe version.

The “Casual” costume has the President’s daughter embracing her emo side, with pink highlights and a very punk outfit. The “Romantic” costume, on the other hand, matches Leon’s previously-revealed outfit. Take a look at the costumes for yourself below.

The costumes come as part of Resident Evil 4’s Digital Deluxe Edition, which also includes four skins for Leon, a pair of deluxe weapons, an option to swap the new soundtrack for Resident Evil 4’s original music, and some sunglasses for Leon.

We’re just over a week away from the launch of the highly-anticipated remake. If you just can’t wait to get your hands on it, Capcom recently released a Resident Evil 4 demo that lets players try out an early section of the game. The demo even contains a cheat code to unlock the Mad Chainsaw difficulty mode.

Lady Gaga, Beyoncé Collaborator Bloodpop Launches Game Studio Featuring ‘Ambitious’ AAA Shooter

Award-winning music producer Bloodpop who’s worked with renowned artists such as Lady Gaga and Beyoncé, has announced Genpop Interactive with the help of former DeNA and Bandai Namco executive Aubrey Tennant. GenPop Interactive is a new studio that will be working on AAA games focusing on “music, fashion, and gaming culture.”

The studio has more than 25 developers who worked on titles such as Halo Infinite, Cyberpunk 2077, The Sims, and more. GenPop Interactive’s first game will be a third-person shooter featuring “novel movement and combat mechanics.”

The upcoming shooter will be marketed toward Gen-Z, and CEO and game director Bloodpop said the following about the upcoming game.

“Gen-Z is eager for new IP that speaks to them and has a long legacy that defines their generation. Major studios have become complacent, relying on giving the Weekend at Bernie’s treatment to their old IP with their publicly traded necromancy. We aren’t just on a mission to create the next great game, but nurture the next generation of popular culture,” Bloodpop said.

GenPop Interactive has raised $6.5 million in funding with the help of various companies and people, including Studio Trigger, the animation studio behind critically acclaimed animes such as Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, Kill la Kill, and more.

Aubrey Tennant, the co-founder and COO, said in a statement that they believe they’re in a unique position “to change the shooter genre with a layered social world that changes based on feedback from the community.”

As of now, it’s still unknown what GenPop Interactives game will be called or when it’ll be released.

Every PS5 Is Available on Amazon Right Now

For those who have been waiting to pick up a PlayStation 5, we have good news: every version of the console is now available on Amazon. This includes the disc edition, the digital edition, and both the God of War Ragnarok and Horizon Forbidden West bundles (which also come in disc and digital editions). Below, you can see a breakdown of each available console on Amazon’s website.

PlayStation 5 Consoles Available on Amazon

It was only very recently that it became possible for people to buy a PlayStation 5 (and Xbox Series X, for that matter) without the panic of stock immediately running out. Sony Interactive Entertainment president Jim Ryan said at the start of this year that “everyone who wants a PS5 should have a much easier time finding one at retailer globally,” now. This was revealed at Sony’s CES tech conference, where the company also boasted how they’ve now surpassed more than 30 million units sold.

If you’re curious to see what other PlayStation items are worth picking up alongside the console, make sure to visit our gift guide for the best PlayStation and PS5 gifts to pick up this year. Alongside games, this guide also includes the PlayStation Pulse 3D wireless headset and the PS5’s DualSense controller.

And, once you have your new PlayStation, you can check out what games are available in PlayStation Plus’s Game Catalog, along with what games are yet to come to the service starting on March 21. Dell is also offering a deal at the moment where you can get the God of War Ragnarok PS5 (disc edition) bundle with an additional DualSense controller in Cosmic Red for only $589.99! With just the one controller, this bundle usually runs for $559, making it a worthwhile pickup.

Microsoft Is Signing Deals to Bring Activision Games to Even More Services

Microsoft has signed yet another 10-year deal with a new cloud gaming provider. This time, it’s with Ubitus, a provider based in Tokyo, Japan.

On Twitter, Xbox’s Phil Spencer said, “Microsoft and Ubitus, a leading cloud gaming provider, have signed a 10-year partnership to stream Xbox PC Games as well as Activision Blizzard titles after the acquisition closes. Our commitment is to give more players, more choice.”

Microsoft corporate VP Sarah Bond added, “Giving customers more choice is core to what we do. Thrilled to partner with Ubitus to give gamers yet another option for how they play Xbox PC games.”

Ubitus is most known for working with many publishers on cloud versions of games for Nintendo Switch, including The Forgotten City, Control, A Plague Tale: Requiem, and Resident Evil Village.

Earlier this week, Microsoft announced that it signed a 10-year deal with Boosteroid, a cloud gaming service based in Ukraine, in order to bring Xbox and PC games to more streaming providers. This would include Activision Blizzard games if its merger with Microsoft goes through.

Xbox works to assage regulators

Microsoft is doing all it can to assuage regulators’ fears of anticompetitiveness within the gaming industry. Most recently, Microsoft signed 10-year deals with Nintendo and GeForce Now to make Activision Blizzard games more available on other platforms.

However, the battle still rages on between Microsoft and Sony as the latter claims that the merger would irreparably harm competition and that PlayStation versions of Activision Blizzard games could be potentially sabotaged to perform worse on the platform.

As noted in a recent PlayStation Blog post, these games and fourteen others will be available to PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium members at no additional cost.

Released nearly a year ago as a timed exclusive on the PS5, Ghostwire: Tokyo was developed by Tango Gamesworks. Earlier today, we learned that Ghostwire: Tokyo is getting a major update and launching on Xbox Series X/S and Game Pass next month. In our review of Ghostwire: Tokyo, we praised its visual design despite its “one-dimensional combat and uninteresting mission design.”

Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection

Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection is a remastered compilation of Uncharted IV: A Thief’s End and The Lost Legacy, released on January 28, 2022, for PS5 before making its way onto PC last October. Enhanced visuals and faster load times aside, the Legacy of Thieves Collection includes additional features, such as DualSense support, 3D audio, and multiple graphical options.

Immortals Fenyx Rising

Ubisoft’s Immortals Fenyx Rising is an open0worled adventure game released back in 2020. Players take control of Fenyx, a winged demigod tasked with saving the Greek gods. In our review of Immortals Fenyx Rising, which we awarded a 7, we said, “its combat is satisfying, with plenty of choice in upgrades, while its central characters, comedic tone, and storytelling are a real highlight.”

Here’s the rest of the games coming to the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog this month:

Deal Alert: Save $45 Off This PS5 God of War Console Bundle at Dell

The PlayStation 5 console is much easier to find now than ever before. Unfortunately, even with the more sustainable inventory, it’s still very difficult to find a PS5 that’s actually discounted. Fortunately, that changes today.

Dell is offering a PS5 Disc Edition console, bundled with the God of War: Ragnarok game and a second DualSense (Cosmic Red) controller, for only $589.99. If you were to buy the PS5 God of War bundle alone, it would run you $559. The DualSense controller in Cosmic Red costs an additional $75. That means instead of paying $634 for both, you’re paying $589.99. That’s a savings of about $45, or 7%.

PS5 God of War Bundle with 2nd DualSense Controller

God of War: Ragnarok is the latest God of War game and we gave it a 10/10 “Masterpiece” rating. If you liked the last God of War game, then you’ll enjoy Ragnarok. It continues the story of Kratos and Atreus as they take on the nine realms of Norse mythology.
