Xbox and Bethesda Attending Gamescom 2023

Xbox and Bethesda are officially locked in for Gamescom 2023, meaning fans attending the event may get a chance to play Starfield ahead of its September 6 launch.

Gamescom itself announced the news in a tweet (below). “Breaking. Xbox and Bethesda will join us on the show floor for Gamescom 2023,” it said. “More details soon.”

Xbox is a regular exhibitor at the convention in Germany, having shown up every year in a time when PlayStation hasn’t. Sony is yet to confirm if it will attend the 2023 show.

Sony last appeared in 2019, opting not to have a presence at the digital-only show caused by COVID-19 or the subsequent events. Nintendo was in the same boat, but confirmed in April it would return to Gamescom in 2023.

2022 saw the return of over 250,000 visitors to the physical show floor in Cologne, Germany. This year’s event takes place August 23 to 27. An Opening Night live launch event kicks off the show a little early though, taking place the night before on August 22.

Last year’s Opening Night Live saw the announcement of Lies of P, a new release date revealed for Gotham Knights, the re-introduction of Dead Island 2, and much more.

F-Zero No Longer Relevant Because of Mario Kart, Says Former Dev

A former F-Zero developer believes Nintendo’s long-dormant racing franchise has remained that way due to the success of Mario Kart.

Speaking to VGC, F-Zero artist and the designer behind Captain Falcon, Takaya Imamura, implied the game wouldn’t be worth the risk when Mario Kart is already incredibly successful (having sold nearly 50 million copies for Nintendo Switch as of November 2022).

Imamura was asked why Nintendo games such as Star Fox get more attention than F-Zero. “I think it’s because Mario Kart is Nintendo’s most popular racing game, and a new F-Zero would cost a fortune,” he said. “My impression is that [Nintendo executive Shigeru Miyamoto] is very affectionate about Star Fox.”

The original F-Zero launched way back in 1990 and was followed up with a handful of games, the final one being F-Zero Climax in 2004. That marks almost two decades since fans last saw a new entry, despite Nintendo showing love to other older franchises with remakes like Super Mario RPG or sequels such as Luigi’s Mansion 3.

Nintendo hasn’t completely forgotten about F-Zero, of course, ironically making Mario Kart 8 DLC based on the classic racer, and last year released N64 game F-Zero X on the Nintendo Switch Online library.

In our 9/10 review of that one from 1998, IGN said: “F-Zero X is another proof that nobody does sequels like Nintendo. The developers kicked out everything that stood in the way of perfectly-tuned gameplay.”

Kiryu’s New Voice Actor Calls on Yakuza Fans to Wait for Like a Dragon to Come Out Before Passing Judgment

Long-time Yakuza protagonist Kazuma Kiryu will have a new English voice actor starting in Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name, and fans are unsure about it.

As reported by The Gamer, YouTuber Yong Yea is replacing Darryl Kurylo and gave fans a preview of the new voice at Anime Expo 2023’s Dragons of Japan panel.

“That little monologue he did was painful,” said a Reddit user in response. “And the yell at the end was very much not Kiryu.” Others were less critical of the performance, though still didn’t think it was a good fit. “Yong Yea’s voice isn’t horrible but it sounds like a 20 year old, not a 50 year old,” said one.

The YouTuber posted on Twitter to defend himself though, and released a better quality but still not professional version of the audio clip.

“Here’s a clean version of the Kiryu voice and dialogue from Anime Expo in more ideal conditions,” Yong Yea said. “This is not an official recording, line, or direction from the game, it’s a quick off the cuff recording from my home booth.”

Finally, reiterating what a lot of commentors were saying in defence of the new voice actor, he added: “Wait for the final game to see how it all comes together.”

Yong Yea will star in The Man Who Erased His Name as it connects the events of Yakuza 8 and the upcoming Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth. It’s due to launch on November 9, while Infinite Wealth only has a vague 2024 release window so far.

After 12 years, Terraria Developers Say Enduring Demand Makes It ‘Hard to Move On’

As Terraria’s next major patch approaches, developer Re-Logic has revealed it’s “hard to move on” and start a new project owing to the success and demand generated by the 2011 cult game.

“After 12 years the game still sells like hot cakes,” said Re-Logic head Andrew Spinks in a Twitter post from his now deactivated account, as reported by PC Gamer. “There is so much demand it makes it hard to move on.”

Since its release in May 2011, Terraria has graced every active gaming platform under the sun, ranging from the PC and Nintendo Switch to the PlayStation Vita, smartphones, and even Google Stadia, following a fraught development process.

During its 12-year lifespan Terraria has expanded significantly in scope, thanks to a slew of patches and free content updates. It is now one of the best-selling games of all time, with over 44 million copies sold as of May 2022. It is also one of the most-played games in Steam history, boasting a concurrent player peak of almost 490,000 in May 2020, with a current all-time approval rating of 97 percent.

But all good things must come to an end, and it seems developer Re-Logic’s long, and arguably heroic display of post-launch support could finish with Terraria’s next major update, patch 1.4.5. Or, it wont. Only time will tell. The (potentially) final 1.4.5 update will see crossover content from the roguelite metroidvania Dead Cells make its way to the game, along with a slew of other updates and improvements.

It’s worth noting this isn’t the first time Re-Logic has sought to put a bow on Terraria’s post-launch updates. In an interview with PC Gamer, Re-Logic’s head of business strategy and marketing Ted Murphy pointed out the team had initially intended to end support for the game with patch 1.3 back in 2015. However, the team had too many “cool ideas” and “unfinished business, so to speak”, to walk away from the game.

2020’s Journey’s End update represented another stepping-off point, but that too was followed by a string of patches. Murphy now believes the time may be ripe “to start work on a second project”, which would allow the team to “explore ideas that might not work, or work as well in the current iteration and technology of Terraria”.

However, Murphy also didn’t rule out the potential of subsequent updates. “We’ve felt that way before — so we do never say never. When will Terraria’s final update truly happen? I don’t even think we can say that with certainty.”

In June Re-Logic revealed it had teamed up with Paper Fort Games to develop a Terraria board game. The crowdfunded offering will “expand the universe of Terraria by faithfully combining the digital game’s biome exploration, character progression, base building, and epic combat with tabletop mechanisms”, according to a Steam store update. No release date has yet been given for the project, beyond the admission it likely won’t launch until 2024 at the earliest.

Metroid Prime Remastered Gets a Massive Price Drop in the UK

We gave Metroid Prime Remastered a resounding 10/10 masterpiece rating in our review, and the game deserves all the plaudits. It’s a wonderful remaster for Nintendo Switch, and well worth picking up if you’re a big fan of the Metroid series. Not only that, but the game has gotten an impressive price drop in the UK recently, coming down to just £21.99 at several retailers.

It’s not like the game cost a ton at RRP either (£34.99), as Nintendo was seemingly quite sensible with its chosen price for the remaster.

That being said, at £22, this is an absolute steal and a must-buy for Switch owners. We’re expecting more great gaming deals during Prime Day 2023 next week, but this is kicking things off in style.

Other great deals you might want to consider right now include Xbox Seagate Expansion Card for its all-time low price of £139, Star Wars Jedi Survivor for just £48, and Elden Ring for just £36.

More Great Deals in the UK

Amazon Prime Day is coming up soon and will surely bring a whole slew of new gaming deals to check out. But, we’ve already got a great selection of early deals to check out right now as well. This includes one of our favourite deals of the year: 3-months of Audible for free if you’re a Prime Member. This is an awesome deal saving you £23.97 in total and grants you access to three audiobook tokens, and the entire Audible podcast library as well.

Super Mario RPG Remake Isn’t Bringing Back Original Director

Nintendo isn’t bringing back Super Mario RPG’s original director for the Nintendo Switch remake.

As reported by Eurogamer, Chihiro Fujioka has revealed he won’t be returning for the remake but is excited about it nonetheless.

“I am not involved in the remake”, Fujioka said to a fan on Twitter who asked of his involvement. “But I am very surprised and pleased with the news.”

Super Mario RPG, which was developed by what’s now Square Enix and released for SNES in 1996, followed Mario, Bowser, and Peach as they set out to repair the wish-granting Star Road.

While Fujioka isn’t returning, Nintendo is bringing back at least one other member of the original development team, as beloved video game composer Yoko Shimomura has announced her return.

The remake was announced during June’s Nintendo Direct, with Nintendo promising a complete overhaul of the original game’s graphics when it launches on November 17.

“Originally released on Super NES, Super Mario RPG has been overhauled with new graphics! Join Mario, Bowser, Princess Peach, and original characters Mallow and Geno, in an RPG filled with twists, turns and treasure,” read an announcement statement.

The Nintendo Direct featured a ton of other announcements too, including that of a new 2D Mario game called Super Mario Bros. Wonder, a WarioWare game for Switch, a remaster of Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon, and much more.

Persona 3 Reload Trailer Reveals Party Members’ New English Voices

Persona 3 Reload will see Atlus remake absolutely everything from the 2006 RPG and, as revealed in a new trailer, this includes bringing in a new voice cast.

Atlus released a gameplay reveal trailer for Persona 3 Reload (despite the initial trailer featuring gameplay) that showcases a handful of the game’s party members and their new voices.

Heather Gonzalez, who played Mineru in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Malaya in Octopath Traveler 2, will take on the role of Yukari Takeba, previously played by Michelle Ruff.

Another prominent inclusion is Zeno Robinson, who played Sakaki in My Hero Academia, as Junpei Iori, previously portrayed by Vic Mignogna.

Aleks Le will also replace Yuri Lowenthal as the protagonist, Allegra Clark will replace Tara Platt as Mitsuru Kirijo, Alehandro Saab will replace Liam O’Brien as Akihiko Sanada, and Suzie Yeung will replace Paula Tiso as Fuuka Yamagishi.

The gameplay reveal trailer (above) acts as an introduction to these various characters, and shows the protagonist chatting with them, running around school, and battling Shadows.

Persona 3 Reload was finally announced at the 2023 Xbox Games Showcase following a string of rumours and one final leak ahead of the event.

It will specifically recreate Persona 3, not Persona 3 FES or Persona 3 Portable, meaning there won’t be a female protagonist or any of the other additional content those versions brought. Unlike Persona 5 Tactica, which was announced alongside it, Persona 3 Reload won’t be coming to Nintendo Switch, though rumours around that version have also begun after Play Asia listed the game and said it wasn’t a mistake.

Persona 5 Tactica Trailer Reveals New Playable Character

Atlus may have accidentally given fans a little more bang for their buck by revealing a new playable character in Persona 5 Tactica’s latest trailer.

As reported by Game Rant, a two-minute character spotlight trailer (above) breaking down the moves and abilities of Joker, Mona, and Erina also revealed a character called Toshiro that will seemingly be playable in the game.

Only viewable briefly, at about 36 seconds into the trailer, the mission objective is to “have Toshiro reach the target destination”. The bottom right corner of the screen, where playable characters like Joker and Mona have their health bars, also shows what’s presumably Toshiro.

This character has a much smaller health bar than the others though, and also doesn’t have any MP or an “Action” available to use, meaning it could just be an escort mission. Toshiro doesn’t appear in the trailer again, so fans will just have to wait and see whether or not his character has any more importance.

The trailer otherwise shows off what players can do when controlling the other characters. Joker has a long range, single use pistol and a special ability called Phantom Judge that can deal big damage even to guarding enemies.

Mona’s wind abilities allow him to knock enemies out of cover, ready for a follow-up from teammates, while his Winds of Time ability deals damage across a huge area. Finally, Erina can target multiple enemies with her weapons and has a special ability called Flag of Freedom that both heals nearby allies and weakens nearby enemies.

Persona 5 Tactica was revealed at the 2023 Xbox Games Showcase as a grid-based tactical RPG similar to the likes of Fire Emblem or XCOM. Its announcement came alongside one for Persona 3 Reload, a remake of the original PS2 game.

Persona 5 Tactica launches November 17 for PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam and Windows.

Just Cause Mobile Cancelled

Square Enix has canceled Just Cause Mobile, its upcoming free-to-play game.

In a statement to VGC, Just Cause global brand lead Anne-Lou Grosbois-Favreau confirmed development has now been stopped on the mobile action game. “It is with great sadness that we are announcing the end of development for Just Cause Mobile,” she said. “As of tomorrow, 3 July 2023, the game will no longer appear on digital stores.”

Just Cause Mobile had previously been available in early access, however, the game has now been removed from Google Play stores. It was due to launch later this year.

“It is never easy to put forth an announcement of this nature, especially to our fans who have been awaiting the release,” said Grosbois-Favreau. “We sincerely appreciate the support you have given us.”

Just Cause Mobile was announced at The Game Awards in 2020 but was pushed back several times since this announcement. It was described as a top-down isometric shooter set within the Just Cause universe and was going to offer a full story campaign along with 30-player competitive multiplayer as well as four-player co-op missions.

A premium currency, Blue Diamonds, was available to purchase during early access but will now be refunded in full. “Please note that any Blue Diamonds purchased during the Regional Early Access have been refunded in full to your Google Play Account on February 24, 2023.”

Just Cause 4 was the franchise’s latest release back in 2018, with fans hoping the upcoming mobile game would give them a new Just Cause story until the next mainline game.

IGN’s Just Cause 4 review gave it 7.9/10 and said: “Just Cause 4 has everything you expect from a Just Cause game, almost to a fault. Relative to Just Cause 3 the improvements are widespread across its beautiful open world, but generally minor. So while blowing up yet another dictator’s army is the same kind of mindless explosive fun and physics-based comedy the series is built on, it doesn’t do much to incorporate the new weather systems or grapple mods into combat. That leaves me with a distinct “more of the same” feeling.”

Yoko Taro Lost His Emil Mask and His Replacement Is a Bit Terrifying and Quite Possibly Cursed

Yoko Taro, the director behind such games as Nier: Automata and Drakengard, revealed he lost the iconic mask he wears in public that is modeled after one worn by Nier’s Emil. As if that wasn’t tragic enough, the replacement leprechaun mask he chose for the time being is actually a bit terrifying and quite possibly cursed.

As reported by Kotaku, Taro was attending Anime Expo 2023 in Los Angeles so he could host a panel about his upcoming anime, KamiErabi God.app, and the mask was lost the night before his panel while he was out drinking.

Taro claims he didn’t lose the Emil mask, but instead, the blame fell to a producer from Fuji TV he shared a drink with. Taro then asked the producer to find him a new mask, but that turned out to be a difficult challenge.

After some time, they happened upon the large leprechaun mask you can see below at a Los Angeles costume store.

“Of course in LA, you know? Leave it to LA to have this specialist store just for masks. And so we went into that store and there was the biggest mask like literally the biggest one they had was one that was sitting up on the shelves and had been there for 30 years,” Taro said.

He then said it appeared the mask was a “going-away present that the store owner’s grandmother had gifted to the business.”

“I thought ‘Oh, poor thing, but it was the best mask there. It was just the best fit. And so I convinced them to let me buy it,” Taro said.

The story doesn’t stop there for the $120 mask, however, as Taro believes the mask was cheaper than he expected because it is probably cursed/possessed by “the spirit of the store owner’s grandmother or a cousin who apparently died in 1945.”

“It’s gotta be possessed or something like that. … It has to be cursed or possessed. There’s something going on with it,” Taro said.

We here at IGN will continue to follow this story closely to see if those rumors turn out to be true.
