Super Mario Bros. Wonder Producer Says There’s Room for 2D and 3D: ‘Everyone Should Enjoy Them Both’

If you uploaded a Super Mario Maker course with cheap hidden blocks, unfair enemy placement, or just overall haphazard design, I’m sorry to say that Nintendo might have judged you for it.

During Nintendo’s Super Mario Bros. Wonder panel at GDC, legendary Nintendo developer Takashi Tezuka was discussing how Super Mario Maker gave players the ability to freely design courses under the same conditions as each other. But Tezuka admitted, “However, when we played the posted courses, and let’s keep this here, some of them were not very good.”

Aside from the added bonus of throwing shade at some Mario Maker designers out there, Tezuka’s wider point tied into how level design is the X factor that can make controls, sound, graphics, and enemies either fall flat or come alive. The Super Mario Bros. Wonder panel was home to some interesting insight about how Nintendo returned to Mario’s 2D roots to create something brand new.

Reimagining 2D Mario

Tezuka and Super Mario Bros. Wonder director Shiro Mouri kicked off the panel by discussing the long wait for a new 2D Mario game. 2012’s New Super Mario Bros. U was the last traditional sidescrolling Mario game until Wonder came along last year, and Tezuka simply said they’d just been busy making other types of sidescrolling games like Super Mario Maker and Super Mario Run: “Honestly, 11 years just went by”, he said.

But Tezuka insisted that 3D Mario games haven’t replaced 2D games, saying, “People may think that 3D Mario games have taken their place… I think everyone should enjoy them both. Do you think that’s too much to ask?” The pair discussed the difference between 2D and 3D Mario, with Mouri saying a merit of 2D games is that it’s easier to experience the game’s design as it was intended. They also added that in 2D Mario games, the developers spend as much time as possible adjusting courses until the very end of development, which is much easier to do than when developing a 3D game.

Mouri and Tezuka approached development of Super Mario Bros. Wonder with the mantra of “big changes”. As Mouri pointed out, elements of the original Super Mario Bros. like warp pipes, Super Mushrooms, and hitting blocks has become normal over time, so the team wanted to create a 2D Mario game full of new secrets and mysteries. Mouri thought, “If I’m going to change the environment anyway, I may as well go hard,” which led to the beginnings of Wonder Effects like wiggling warp pipes and singing Piranha Plants.

Nintendo developers have previously shared the collaborative nature of Super Mario Bros. Wonder’s development, and Mouri and Tezuka expanded on that during the GDC panel. “Nintendo believes everyone on the team is a game designer,” Tezuka said, explaining the brainstorming sessions to come up with different Wonder Effects. The idea for the Wonder Quiz effect came from a programmer in his first year at Nintendo, demonstrating that everyone’s ideas were on the table.

We also learned about another Wonder Effect that didn’t make the cut, where Mario would turn into a giant, 8-bit, blocky version of himself, trying to avoid getting eaten by Wonder’s new block-eating Gnawsher enemies. This was cut because it was impossible to strategically avoid enemies, resulting in an unfocused mad dash to the goal.

As for the future of 2D Mario, Tezuka said it all comes down to thinking about what will be the core of the game, and that he hopes the presentation got people interested in 2D game development.

A Kind World

The Nintendo developers also took some time to discuss Super Mario Bros. Wonder’s online multiplayer modes. Nintendo took an interesting approach to online play, where shadows of other players from around the world could help each other find secrets and reach the end of a level.

Mouri said he wanted to create online gameplay that “would make you want to say thank you” to a stranger, adding, “We help people around us when they are in trouble… When you have a team made up of people with that mindset, there’s a good chance something good will come out of it. This holds true in game development as well… For [Wonder], we wanted to create a kind world like that, where online play is where you act not for yourself, but for the people around you.”

This led to the development team settling on the theme of subtle connection, and Tezuka said this is just one solution to what online play looks like for a Mario game.

All of Nintendo’s experimentation with Wonder’s development paid off, as we called it “the true next step for 2D Mario platformers” in our review.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 Players Are Planning an NPC Murder Spree to Boost the Game’s Frame-Rate

This week, Capcom told IGN that performance issues with the PC version of Dragon’s Dogma 2 may be linked to the heavy amount of CPU demanded from NPCs in the game. Now, in response, fans are plotting an NPC murder spree in a bid to boost the game’s frame-rate.

“In Dragon’s Dogma 2, a large amount of CPU usage is allocated to each character and dynamically calculates the impact of their physical presence in various environments. In certain situations where numerous characters appear simultaneously, the CPU usage can be very high and may affect the frame rate,” a Capcom representative told IGN. “We are aware that in such situations, settings that reduce GPU load may currently have a limited effect; however, we are looking into ways to improve performance in the future.”

With Dragon’s Dogma 2 not out until March 22 (check out the Dragon’s Dogma 2 global release times to find out when exactly it goes live where you live), the game’s burgeoning community is coming together to identify NPCs who can be killed safe in the knowledge their untimely deaths are inconsequential.

“Idea: a community made list of inconsequential NPCs you can kill to boost FPS,” reads a thread on the Dragon’s Dogma subreddit. “Since the way NPCs are handled is theorized to be very taxing on your CPU, killing off NPCs should boost your performance. However, what’s the point of killing off NPCs to boost your frame-rate if you’re also killing content? This is why I am suggesting a community sources list of junk NPCs we are free to murder.”

In response, one user suggested killing any non-shopkeeper NPC, and potentially even guards. Another suggested finishing a quest before murdering its related NPC, although as others pointed out, that strategy is fraught with risk. “This idea is wild,” replied another. “The optimization is so bad that we have people wanting to commit mass genocide for more fps.” “Can’t wait for a week to go and someone posts the game running at 60fps after slaughtering everyone,” joked another user.

Less than 24 hours since IGN’s story revealed Capcom’s explanation for poor performance on PC, this Dragon’s Dogma 2 NPC murder spree has become a meme.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 only has one visual mode across all consoles, and launches with an uncapped frame-rate for all consoles. According to IGN Dragon’s Dogma 2 performance reviewer Michael Thompson, areas such as Vernworth are very demanding, even on the highest-end machines and, in particular, the CPU. Dragon’s Dogma 2 currently has high demands on hardware, with the Steam Deck struggling to run at playable rates. Even high-end machines with an RTX4090 paired with an AMD 5800X3D CPU can drop into the 30s while in denser populated towns.

While you wait to play, check out Everything You Need to Know Before Starting Dragon’s Dogma 2, as well as IGN’s Dragon’s Dogma 2 review.

High on Life: Squanch Games Brings the Hit Franchise to Comics

High on Life is one of the most memorably absurd first-person shooters to come along in years, and it’s a game that’s practically tailor-made to work in other media. Thankfully, that’s just what’s happening, as Squanch Games and Titan Comics join forces for a new High on Life comic book series.

IGN can exclusively debut one of the new covers for High on Life #1. Check it out below:

The High on Life comic is written by Alec Robbins, a veteran of the game who also created the web comic Mr. Boop. The series is drawn by Kit Wallis (Wonderland) and colored by JP Jordan (Plough Man).

Here’s Titan’s official description for the new series:

Though they restored peace to the cosmos by killing Garmantuous, there’s no rest for the Bounty Hunter when a brutal new threat to Humans shoots its way onto the scene. Armed with plucky & determined Harper – and the rest of the Gatlian gang – the series will take them on an explosive, twisting adventure across the cosmos.

A story of GUTS, GORE, REDEMPTION, and lost love, this brand-new miniseries will be a rollercoaster romp in the world of the eponymous video game.

High on Life #1 is priced at $3.99 and will be released on June 12, 2024.

The High on Life game scored an 8 out of 10 in IGN’s review, with Travis Northup writing, “High on Life is an irreverent, absurd shooter that manages to shine with its outrageous humor, silly setting and story, and some really goofy, foul-mouthed guns that pull the whole thing together for the vast majority of the time. Combat is a bit sloppy, especially during the first act, and the whole sci-fi adventure sometimes has an unpolished feel to it, but once you get some new tools of destruction and movement options, it rises to the occasion. Not all of its jokes find their punchline, but with memorable boss fights, unique alt-fire abilities and exploration, and way more terrible movies to watch than I expected, this wacky journey is definitely worth your time.”

More recently, the game received its first expansion in the form of the DLC campaign HIgh on Knife.

Assassin’s Creed Jade Reportedly Delayed to 2025 Amid Tencent Pivot

High-profile mobile game Assassin’s Creed Jade is reportedly delayed from this year to 2025 as part of a significant strategic shift at developer Tencent.

Reuters reported that Tencent, the world’s largest video games company, has redeployed hundreds of staff from the team developing Assassin’s Creed Jade onto its recently launched party game DreamStar.

Assassin’s Creed Jade is a mobile spin-off set in ancient China that has been in development for at least four years, Reuters said. IGN has asked Ubisoft for comment.

The delay is part of a pivot at Tencent, which is now looking to move away from developing Western franchises for mobile due to thin margins. Instead, Tencent wants to focus on making games like NetEase’s smash hit party mobile game Eggy Party, and miHoYo’s phenomenally successful Genshin Impact using its own intellectual property so it can keep the bulk of the profits.

Assassin’s Creed Jade is the first full game in the franchise to be made exclusively for mobile devices. It’s in the works at Level Infinite, a Tencent subsidiary, in partnership with Ubisoft. Meanwhile, Assassin’s Creed Codename Red, the next mainline Assassin’s Creed game, is due out by the end of March 2025.

Dreams Dev Media Molecule Says Layoffs Impact Planned Community and Curation Support

Media Molecule has said the layoffs at the Sony-owned studio have affected plans for ongoing community and curation support in PlayStation 4 game Dreams.

The Guildford, UK-based developer, also known for creating the LittleBigPlanet series, entered into a consultancy with staff last year. That process ends spring 2024, when Media Molecule will lose its Curation Team.

In a new blog post, Media Molecule said that the impact to its teams means “we will be unable to deliver on all the promises” outlined in a 2023 blog post discussing plans for ongoing community and curation support in Dreams following the end of live support. This included The Impsider editorial, which will now not happen. However, Media Molecule said it will continue its streams and support of the Dreams community via social channels.

As announced, live support for DreamSurfing and DreamShaping will end in mid-April. Media Molecule said this will coincide with the launch of new playlists alongside spotlighting the Dreams Recommender playlist providing “tip-top” recommendations based on what players recently played in Dreams.

“Overall, the plan here is ensuring that Dreams transitions into a self-sustaining platform, with these changes helping to filter new creations through to regular Dreams players whilst creators reach their deserved audience for their games, animations, music and everything in between,” Media Molecule said.

Fans have expressed concern about the future of Dreams ever since Media Molecule announced the redundancies in October. Media Molecule insisted there are no plans to take Dreams offline, while admitting the last 12 months have been “tough” for the studio.

“We see a lot of talk and a lot of worry about the future of Dreams in our streams and on social media, and while it’s impossible for anyone to predict what the future might hold, we want to reassure you today that there are currently no plans to take Dreams offline, restricting access to the thousands upon thousands of amazing creations brought to life by all of our fabulous creators,” Media Molecule said.

“This was an incredibly tough time for the studio as a whole and it meant the world to see support from folks on our social channels. While we’re still working through the process, the studio as a whole continues to work on our exciting new project which we’ll talk about when we’re ready.”

The redundancies at Media Molecule were announced months before Sony confirmed plans to lay off around 900 staff, or about 8% of its global PlayStation workforce. The devastating wave of cuts affected a number of PlayStation studios, including Insomniac, Naughty Dog, Guerrilla, Firesprite, and, most significantly, PlayStation’s London studio, which is to close. Alongside the layoffs, a number of in-development games were canceled, Sony said.

Helldivers 2 Dev ‘Deep Down in the Trenches’ Digging Into Current Crash Problem

If you’re playing Helldivers 2 and finding the game crashes more than usual, you’re not alone. Developer Arrowhead has said a lot of players are currently being affected by a crash issue, which is linked to the release of a recent patch, and it’s on the case.

The crash problem began with this week’s release of patch 1.000.103, which nerfed planet hazards and patrols spawning on players, among other things. A crash causes the game to freeze and forces a restart. Given Helldivers 2 missions can take around 40 minutes to extract with all obtained resources and objectives complete, getting a crash towards the end is extremely frustrating.

In a post on the Helldivers Discord, Arrowhead community manager Twinbeard addressed the crash problem, and said the developer is on the case.

“We know that many of you are experiencing a lot of crashes at the moment (seemingly linked to the patch deployed earlier today, which at least resolved the persistent friend request issue for a lot of players),” Twinbeard said. “Our team is deep down in the trenches digging into the issue as we speak. We are on alert ready to update on any changes here. We’re very sorry @everyone for not being able to supply you with the glorious feeling of bug and bot stomping and hope to have the game more stable as soon as possible.”

Helldivers 2’s problems don’t end there. A rare message from Game Master Joel, who pulls the meta narrative strings as players fight to liberate planets from the Terminids and Automatons, revealed the Galactic War is not tracking player contribution properly.

“A message for @everyone from the Game Master,” began the post on the Helldivers Discord. “Helldivers! We’re aware of an issue with the Galactic War not tracking your effective spread of Liberty properly. We are investigating this urgently and will keep you posted as soon as we understand the issue and have a fix to communicate to you. Thanks very much for your patience while we squash some software bugs.”

Yesterday, March 20, Arrowhead deployed additional fixes to the game’s backend to address Eagle kill stats not increasing as expected and missions completed stats counting twice per mission. Three fixes were made for the pesky friend invites problem that Arrowhead said should resolve some of the issues there.

These problems come amid Helldivers 2’s latest Major Order, which tasks players with liberating a number of planets controlled by the Terminids. Players are hoping Arrowhead will extend the Major Order deadline as a result.

If you’re looking for more on Helldivers 2, check out IGN’s feature on the Let Me Solo Her of Helldivers 2, a player who has answered over 100 SOS Beacons as part of a mission to help others. Helldivers 2 has become one of the surprise hits of 2024 since launching in February, topping the charts on Steam and reportedly selling around three million copies. According to at least one analyst, it’s still growing. Check out IGN’s Helldivers 2 review to find out why it’s going down so well.

Guilty Gear Strive’s Latest Character Is a Long-Missed Fan Favorite Named A.B.A.

Guilty Gear Strive’s newest DLC character for Season 3 has been revealed as A.B.A., a long-missed fan favorite that first appeared in 2012’s Guilty Gear XX Accent Core R and will arrive once more on March 26, 2024.

A.B.A.’s return was announced during the Arc Live AWT Preview Show, and she will be released alongside a free update that introduces a new battle stage called ‘Fallen Prayer, Engulfed Lives,’ balance changes, and a new special move for Millia Rage called Artemis.

If you’d like to play as A.B.A., she will cost $6.99 individually or as part of Season Pass 3 for $24.99.

A.B.A. is known for being jealous and belligerent from time to time, but she is also considerate and sympathetic towards others. That jealousy does have benefits for combat, however, as she can enter the powerful Jealousy Rage state by meeting certain conditions.

Once in Jealousy Rage, she gets improved movement and different properties for the majority of her normal, special, and Overdrive moves.

A.B.A. is joined by her “reluctant husband” named Paracelsus, who is currently in the form of a magical battle axe named Flament Nagel. As they spent more time together, Paracelsus slowly began changing into a key, and A.B.A. now wants to find a human body for him and discover why these things are happening.

On March 26, A.B.A. will become the third character in Season Pass 3 following Johnny and Elphelt. There will be one more character in this season that will jump into battle later in 2024.

As for the battle stage, ‘Fallen Prayer, Engulfed Lives’ features a “clear blue sea and an eye-catching monument” and a coral reef overgrowth that has made this place a hit for tourists. Millia Rage’s new Artemis special move, on the other hand, lets the character “attack while leaping up at an angle behind her.” While she attacks, she can evade low-hitting attacks and get to an opponent’s opposite side.

For more, check out our Guilty Gear Strive review, what games will join it in EVO 2024, and where this game ranks on our list of the 10 best fighting games ever made.
