With Silent Hill 2, Bloober Team Is Entering a New ‘Phase’ of Its Existence as a Horror Developer

Eight years after Bloober Team formally became known as a horror game developer, the studio is preparing for another shift, though it’s admittedly a touch less radical. It wants its games to start competing with industry giants of horror and adjacent genres like Resident Evil, The Last of Us, and Hellblade, and it’s starting with the remake of Silent Hill 2.

Speaking to IGN at DICE Summit 2023, Bloober Team CEO Piotr Babieno says it wants to change the way it tells stories. He wants to move beyond games that lean on simple mechanics typically found in “walking simulator” games – a term that Babieno acknowledges still attracts undeserved derision from gaming audiences.

Instead, he wants Bloober to be making games with larger scopes and more complex and involved gameplay mechanics on the level of other giants in the horror genre. He wants Bloober to be known as the studio that defines the future of video game horror, especially as he observes more people turning to horror for catharsis amidst increasingly chaotic and terrifying real-world events.

“We still would like to make meaningful games, we still would like to keep our DNA to tell [stories] about things which are important to us,” he says. “However, not by environmental storytelling, but by full action, to have much more mass appeal. And I think that this is the reason why we have chosen Silent Hill.”

We still would like to make meaningful games, we still would like to keep our DNA to tell [stories] about things which are important to us

I ask Babieno if the studio’s remake of Silent Hill 2 means that Bloober will continue to carry forward the Silent Hill franchise on behalf of Konami with more titles in the future. He replies that Konami is interested in conversations with Bloober, and “I’m not going to say never,” but affirms Bloober is focused for now on Silent Hill 2 and its secret project with Private Division. What’s more, he makes a point to defend Konami a bit, noting that the publisher has been on the receiving end of plenty of audience ire in the years following incidents like Hideo Kojima’s controversial departure and related reports of a dehumanizing work culture, as well as an overall reduced number of releases in recent years, especially of its most beloved IP.

“Those people who are in charge of Konami Gaming right now, of course I can’t tell you all the details, but I believe that they do understand how gaming works,” Babieno says. “They came from companies which worked on many great projects, and I’m pretty sure that they are making great choices by choosing partners, by choosing projects…And I do understand that people are a little bit angry at Konami for the stuff which happened in the past, but I would like to say, give them the time, because they do know what they are doing.”

1-2-3-Bloober

With this shift in how it looks at horror, Babieno says Bloober Team is hoping to effectively launch a new “phase” in its studio life, of sorts. He calls it “Bloober 3.0,” and while he’s not throwing any launch parties or making any big announcements around it, he’s quietly hoping the effects will be visible as a significant shift in the way Bloober Team makes psychological horror games going forward.

Babieno explains this Bloober 3.0 idea first by going back to when he believes Bloober team first transitioned from “1.0” to “2.0”. He recalls that when the studio first started in 2008, it made “all possible mistakes.”

“I micromanaged at the beginning, I made a lot of mistakes by choice in projects,” he says. “And at the beginning we thought about our shareholders, and we tried to make them happy because they were investors in our company. We followed their needs.

“We awoke in 2014 when we launched Basement Crawl, which was the worst game on PlayStation for that time. And…it was the moment which changed us because we decided, if we would like to keep [making games], we need to focus on something that we will be part of, that we will feel we would like to give gamers.”

Which is how Bloober Team ended up pivoting hard back into the horror genre it had originally been born from, having previously been a part of a studio called Nibris that worked on a number of canceled Nintendo DS and Wii horror games. The studio considered changing its name to something “darker and more meaningful” along with its portfolio shift, but opted to keep the name Bloober Team in an effort to own its history and mistakes.

And there was a culture shift too, Babieno says, specifically in how he himself worked. Babieno says he made an effort to quit micromanaging projects or even being involved as a producer, and instead took on more of a top-level leadership role giving overall guidance, providing resources, and endeavoring to trust the experts on the teams. He’s happy with how it’s gone so far, noting that studio attrition is extremely low and the company is vehemently avoiding layoffs amid a surge in redundancies industry-wide.

Forever Independent

Bloober’s recent history has involved a number of different publishing and IP partners, which would seem to make it ripe for acquisition. But Babieno is adamant that while he has had a lot of conversations with potential partners, and while a dedicated horror studio is a desirable prospect, Bloober is not a studio interested in being acquired. He wants to remain independent, because he doesn’t want anyone else besides the members of Bloober Team defining what kinds of games the studio gets to make.

“If we will have someone who [acquires us], then perhaps one day they will make the decision, ‘Maybe we could put them on a [different] project,’ and I don’t want to. Those people who came to us from…other big studios in Poland and foreign countries, I think that they came because they would like to be part of the creative process. So my goal is to stay independent. We had a renewal of strategic options and we decided that as a company we would like to follow the path of independence.”

For Babieno, Bloober 3.0 is his vision of the long-term future. Focused on making psychological horror games conceived and crafted internally that get lots and lots of people talking and define the future of the genre. And most importantly, he wants to make games that cause players to think deeply about what they experienced long after they’ve set down the controller.

“Our idea is to make games which will make an impact on you, that you understand more not so much about our characters, not necessarily about the universe which we are creating, but about yourself,” he says. “Because those choices which we are offering in the game will allow you to understand better, ‘Am I [a certain kind of] person? Why did I make this choice and not the other? Is there something wrong with me?’ Those moral conflicts, which are in the best games, are not made by people more than once, maybe twice [in their real lives]. Usually never. But because we have the opportunity to check ourselves by playing games, we are able to understand ourselves and others better.”

The interviewee’s responses have been lightly edited for clarity.

Hefty PS5 Firmware 7.0 Update Addresses Adds a Host of Quality-of-Life Improvements

Earlier today, Sony launched version 7 of the PS5 software, which includes support for VRR at 1440p resolution and Discord integration for PS5. But the latest PS5 firmware update also rolled out several quality-of-life improvements for PS5 owners.

Thanks to the latest firmware update, US and UK can now use voice commands to capture gameplay. These users can say actions such as “Hey PlayStation, start recording” to begin capturing gameplay footage. This feature is convenient for those who want to capture gameplay footage without using button prompts to start recording.

Sony also made it easier for PS5 owners to find their VR games. Using new filters in your game library, you will be able to filter out and quickly locate all your PlayStation VR and PlayStation VR2 games you currently own.

The latest PS5 firmware update makes it easier for PS5 owners to access their PS4 saved data. When users install a PS4 game on their PS5 and have a saved data file, a notification will appear in the PlayStation Network cloud storage. PS4 to PS5 data transfer aside, the latest firmware update makes it easy to transfer PS5 data to another PS5 console by using a local Wi-Fi network or LAN cable.

The last noteworthy thing introduced in the new PS5 firmware update is that PS5 owners that own a game’s physical disc can now use the same disc installation to play the digital copy without inserting the disc into their console.

The update follows the recent release of the PlayStation VR2, which we called a “quantum leap” over the original device in our review. The next major PS5 game is Resident Evil 4 Remake, which figures to push the platform harder than pretty much any game to date. It is also being released on PS4, PC and Xbox Series X|S.

For more info on the new firmware update, check out the changelog for the full list of new changes in the PS5 firmware update.

Crucial’s legendary MX500 SATA SSD is $103 for 2TB

best gaming SSDs in the SATA category in my books, right alongside the legendary Samsung 870 Evo. That’s because the SSD offers excellent performance while working within the confines of the SATA interface, with straightforward TLC NAND flash and a DRAM-equipped design that ensures strong sustained performance – something lacking in QLC DRAM-less designs.

Today, the Crucial MX500 in its 2TB capacity is down to $102.99 at Amazon US, making it nearly 50% off its MSRP and the lowest price we’ve ever recorded.

Resident Evil 4 Remake’s Infamous Rain Will Be Fixed With Day One Patch

Clearer skies are ahead for the Resident Evil 4 remake, as Capcom said there’s a patch in the works to diminish the extreme rain effects.

In an interview with Press Start Australia, Resident Evil 4 producer Hirabayashi Yoshiaki addressed fan concerns about the overbearing weather.

“We’ve seen everyone’s reaction to the rain effects, and we are working on a day-one patch to make adjustments,” Yoshiaki said.

Fans first noticed Resident Evil 4’s extreme rain in a Game Informer gameplay video. The vertical slice of the game took place shortly after Leon and Ashley escape the church, and it showed the pair working their way through a cemetery.

Heavy rain was falling during the gameplay, and while it was probably intended to enhance the moody atmosphere, many fans found the intensity and visual prominence of the rain effects too distracting. Based on Yoshiaki’s comments, it didn’t take long for the Resident Evil 4 dev team to notice the feedback and begin working on changes.

With the rain issue out of the way, Resident Evil 4 fans can look forward to all of the exciting details about the remake. We recently spoke with the developers ourselves, where we learned about new finishing moves, side quests, Ashley’s revamped mechanics, and more.

We also learned about the hurdles facing a new Resident Evil chainsaw controller. It alo won’t be long until we get to see even more of the game, as Resident Evil 4 is part of the lineup for this week’s Capcom Spotlight.

Feature: “I Am Deeply Moved” – Fatal Frame Devs On Bringing ‘Mask Of The Lunar Eclipse’ To The West, Finally

Remaster launches worldwide this week.

15 years after the original launched on the Nintendo Wii, Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse (carrying the series’ Project Zero moniker in Europe) is finally making its way to the West in an official capacity on Switch. With revamped graphics and a host of new features, the game looks to recapture the essence of the 2008 version (particularly its scare factor) while introducing several quality-of-life enhancements to bring it more in line with modern gaming.

Xbox Celebrates Women in Gaming this International Women’s Day

Some of my earliest memories include watching my dad play as Master Chief in Halo: Combat Evolved. My brother and I would hide behind the couch to sneak a peek at the super soldiers and aliens in battle, which my mother thought might be too much for our young eyes. But it left an impression on me.  When I was a little older, I dropped into battle with my customized Spartan, who had pink armor and a unicorn banner, right alongside my brother.

Even though gaming is one of my passions, I struggled to find gamer friends at the all-girls school I attended. Aside from an occasional party game session, gaming just didn’t seem like a way I could connect with my friends. As a girl, I didn’t identify with the perceived competitive, macho culture that was associated with gamers at the time. Few games were marketed toward girls, and most of them involved pets or brand name dolls. While I enjoyed those games too, I also wanted to experience RPGs, first-person shooters, and action-adventure games where I could be the hero. One of my brothers, though, got to enjoy Halo LAN Parties with his friends. He got Xbox Live and played with online friends, too. I was envious that I couldn’t share that same experience with my friends.

I’m grateful, though, that the industry has changed to be more inviting and inclusive of all people. I’ve worked with Microsoft for five years and landed this amazing role with Xbox working as a Senior Product Manager with the Xbox Store. I’m proud to be part of an organization that continues to evolve to increase diverse representation in its game collection and among game creators. I also find fulfillment in teaching computer science to high school students as part of the Microsoft TEALS program, which pairs industry volunteers with teachers to impart curriculum to them in a sustainable way. It means so much to me to see women increasingly represented in those classes and serve as a role model to those interested in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) careers.

Halo was the first game I experienced which allowed me to customize my character to represent me in some way. Even still when I play a game, whether it is Disney Dreamlight Valley, Fortnite, or Animal Crossing, I enjoy customizing my character’s appearance, gear, and skins. Having that representation creates an emotional connection for me that makes me want to turn on my console, grab a cozy blanket, and return to my favorite games over and over again.

In honor of women, and especially women who enjoy gaming, here are a few ways that Team Xbox is uplifting and supporting women this year.

Artist Tacha P Shares Her Vision of Womanhood and Gaming through her Xbox Logo Design

Headshot of artist Tacha P of HotSupply.

My work is focused on conceptualizing the realms of digital and physical experiences through immersive visuals, and I often take inspiration from the gaming community, especially in character development and world-building. It’s an honor to be part of Women’s History Month celebrations at Xbox and share a design concept inspired by growth, dreams, and stepping out one’s comfort zone without necessarily knowing the outcome.

The idea of womanhood fueled my creativity here, and specifically, choosing to see the beauty that exists everywhere in the world – even places you’ve never been, or within feelings not yet tapped into. This is personal to me as I know that the path lies ahead, yet the destination is unclear. Spiritually, I feel a distinct connection to my future that fuels my own growth. In the piece, golden rays highlight the controller, signifying the positivity brought into the world by the gaming community. Meanwhile, abstract shapes and larger-than-life objects invite us to dream big and know that we hold the power to shape our own destinies.

Women’s History Month 2023: Xbox Ambassadors Share Their Stories

Xbox Ambassador rainbow logo

The Xbox Ambassadors community is made up of diverse gamers from around the world and we love to amplify and highlight the voices of these players. In celebration of Women’s History Month, we asked select Xbox Ambassador Community Champions what it means to them to be a woman in gaming.

Here’s a sneak peek from our Q&A with Xbox Ambassadors BlondiebutGeeky and oOGingerAleOo.

What is your favorite memory as a woman in gaming?

“I would have to say when a younger female gamer came to me and thanked me for helping them. While we look at each other as all gamers, it is nice to be some kind of a role model for younger women.” – oOGingerAleOo, Xbox Ambassador

From your perspective, what does the future look like for women in gaming?

“I think it looks very promising. Ever growing. With more women in the industry, from game developers to hundreds of other roles. Women will be a part of every avenue and making the gaming space bigger and brighter. I watch how the narrative of games has expanded, grabbing the attention of women, and turning them into gamers. Programs like STEM and Women in Games are encouraging women to explore fields they might not normally gravitate towards. Empowerment like this is making huge differences in the growth of women in gaming and technology. We need to raise the awareness and have more conversations about representation for women in gaming.” – BlondiebutGeeky, Xbox Ambassador

Wargroove 2 Announced for Nintendo Switch and PC

Chucklefish and Robotality have announced Wargroove 2, a sequel to the Advance Wars-inspired strategy game for PC and Nintendo Switch. The game does not have an official release date yet.

As reported by Nintendo Life, Wargroove 2 takes place in a beachy region named Aurania and will have three campaign arcs with a storytelling approach similar to that of Fire Emblem: Three Houses.

It has new features such as Conquest, which is a roguelike single-player mode, as well as new commanders and unit types to control, an improved map, campaign, and cutscene editors.

Commanders have a unique skill called a Groove that promise to change the pace of a battle, as players can supercharge their Groove ability to unleash an even more powerful attack.

Players can also participate in up to four player co-op or versus battles either locally or online, with rule customization and asynchronous play included.

Wargroove was first released in 2019 for PC, PS4, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox One. In IGN’s Wargroove review, we said: “Wargroove is the Advance Wars successor its long-neglected fans have been waiting for. It faithfully revives the tactics I loved that series for while putting plenty of its own spins on the concept.”
