Metroid Prime Developers Criticise Remaster for Not Crediting Original Team

Two developers who worked on the original Metroid Prime have criticised the newly released remaster for not fully crediting the original creative team.

Zoid Kirsch, who formerly worked for Retro Studios as Senior Gameplay Engineer on the original Metroid Prime, posted a screenshot from the remaster’s credits to Twitter.

The message, which appears right at the very end of Metroid Prime Remaster’s credits roll, reads: “Based on the work of Metroid Prime (original Nintendo Gamecube and Wii versions) development staff”. No full credits for the original development team are included; only those who took part in the creation of the remaster are credited in full.

“While many studios did amazing work on the remaster, I’m let down Metroid Prime’s Remaster does not include the full original game credits,” said Kirsch. “I worked with so many amazing people on the game and everyone’s name should be included in the remaster, not just a single card like this.”

Kirsh’s comment was followed up by Jack Mathews, former tech lead on the Metroid Prime series at Retro Studios. “This is a travesty,” he said. “Not just for my credit (even though most of my code was probably replaced), but for people whose code and work are largely unchanged, like Mark HH, Steve McCrea, all of the uprezzed art and concepts, the game design. Shameful.”

The issue of remakes and remasters not crediting the original developers is not a new one. Shadow of the Colossus and the Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Triology remakes are just two examples of games that have not provided full credit to the original teams.

The issue of credit goes much wider, too. Only last month The Last of Us co-creator Bruce Straley spoke about his lack of credit on the HBO show, and noted it may be a reason for unionisation.

Super Mario Bros. Movie Plumbing Commercial & Website Launched

“Fixing pipes is our game!”.

Nintendo and Illumination have launched a new Super Mario Bros. Movie 30-second commercial and website, recreating the Super Mario Bros. Super Show! cartoon theme song dating back to 1989.

You can watch Mario & Luigi rap and even visit a themed Super Mario Bros. Plumbing website, where you can learn more about their “family-owned and operated” business serving Brooklyn and Queens. There’s even an “About Us” section on the website and some classic references thrown in the customer testimonials.

Soapbox: An Ode To Ramón Salazar, Resident Evil’s Most Absurd Villain

“My, my, we’ve got a feisty one”.

Soapbox features enable our individual writers and contributors to voice their opinions on hot topics and random stuff they’ve been chewing over. Today, Ollie looks back on the pantheon of resident evils in all the Resident Evils and pens a tribute to perhaps his favourite character in video gamedom…

I have a bit of a confession to make. Back in 2005 when I played Resident Evil 4 for the first time on my trusty GameCube, I completely fell in love with it, but Ramón Salazar and I didn’t get off to the best of starts. After playing through the opening village section of the game, which featured deadly Ganados, the esteemed Dr. Salvador, El Gigante, and the fearsome village chief, Bitores Méndez, my first encounter with Salazar left somewhat of a bitter taste in my mouth.

Talking Point: What Do You Name Link When You’re Playing A Zelda Game?

New game, new name.

We are but a few months away now from the release of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (finally) and it is fair to say that many of us are just a little bit excited. We recently got a look at the second trailer for it, and one of the ways that we have been channelling this excitement until 12th May is through replaying previous games in the series. This, of course, means that it has once again been time to name The Hero of Time.

For many, there is an obvious answer to this one: Link. That is the name of the series’ lead protagonist, so that is the name that many a dedicated Hylian explorer opts for (bar the odd save file all in lowercase or, in some instances, a file where everyone appears to shout the hero’s name as he goes by, “LINK”).

Morph Ballin’.

Welcome one and all to this week’s edition of Box Art Brawl!

Last weekend we took a look at Suda51’s Killer7, one of the ‘Capcom Five’ titles from the glory days of the GameCube. The results were… not close — expectedly so, really. The North American cover held onto the top spot with 58% of votes in its favour. This was followed by Europe on 32% and Japan bringing up the rear with only 10% of the vote.

Switch’s Game Boy Library Doesn’t Have A Set Schedule, According To Nintendo

“But each collection will continue to grow”.

Nintendo has pumped out classic games for its Switch Online service on a consistent basis. There’s kind of a pattern, but that doesn’t necessarily mean fans should expect the same thing when it comes to the newly released retro libraries.

Axios Gaming co-author Stephen Totilo reached out to Nintendo following the launch of the new Game Boy and Game Boy Advance services for Switch Online to ask it how often fans could expect games to be added to the service. In short: “There is no set schedule for new releases, but each collection will continue to grow.”

Metroid Prime Engineer “Let Down” By Exclusion Of Original Credits In Remaster

“Everyone’s name should be included”.

Nintendo surprised pretty much everyone earlier this week when it shadow-dropped Metroid Prime Remastered after years of ongoing rumours.

While most people are satisfied, it seems not everyone out there is happy. Former Retro studios engineer Zoid Kirsch, who recently mentioned how he wasn’t very impressed with the quality of the doors in the remaster, has now voiced his frustration about the game’s credits – noting how it does not include the full original credits.
