Welcome back to another RPS Time Capsule. I will age a thousand years by writing this next sentence, but today we’re casting our minds back to twenty years ago, excavating our personal favourite games from the actually quite good year of 2003. Yep, instant wrinkles like I’ve just been caught in a Death Stranding rain shower. I better finish this introduction quickly before I disintegrate to a pile of dust – much like all the other games from this year that didn’t make it into this year’s Time Capsule. Come and find out which ones we’ve decided to save below.

How lockdown led to comedy-mystery ‘Loco Motive’.
Creating an engaging and humorous point-and-click adventure can be a hefty challenge at the best of times, but for developer Robust Games, the endeavour provided a much-needed release from the isolation that the nationwide lockdowns spawned during the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.
Since its initial announcement for the Switch at the tail-end of 2021, you’d be forgiven if Loco Motive slipped from your mind through 2022 as its planned release window came and went. But when a simple tweet from creative director Adam Riches garnered nearly 15,000 likes just a couple of weeks ago, it’s clear that this comedic twist on a classic Agatha Christie story is resonating with murder mystery fans worldwide.

Lunark is more than just a love letter to Flashback
Aeons ago, I wrote about the Leftfield collection that was supposed to happen at Rezzed 2020. Ploughing through several emotions without comment, in amongst the games that we never got to see as a result of Things Happening was an earlier version of Lunark, a clearly Flashback-influenced action puzzle platformer.
I’ve kind of worried about it ever since, so I was glad to see it released recently, and gladder still that it’s a lot of fun.
Hogwarts Legacy Has Amassed Over $1 Billion
Hogwarts Legacy has now sold 15 million copies and made over $1 billion, and that number is expected to notably increase as the game becomes available on previous-generation platforms.
Talking as part of the company’s earnings call earlier today, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav said: “Hogwarts Legacy has amassed more than $1 billion in retail sales and over 15 million units sold worldwide to date, and today the team is launching the game on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One platforms.”
The sales numbers make Hogwarts Legacy WB’s fifth $1 billion-plus gaming franchise, putting it in a stable with LEGO, DC, Mortal Kombat, and Game of Thrones.
But sales are expected to keep growing. Not only does Hogwarts Legacy launch on PS4 and Xbox One today, but a Switch version will arrive in July. JB Perrette, CEO of global streaming and games at WB Discovery, noted during the earnings call that that the Switch version was important for sales.
“We see that as probably a much bigger install base and a fan base,” he said, noting that Nintendo has a huge install base in Japan, where Harry Potter “skews very strongly in terms of popularity”.
“We see a much bigger upside probably from that release, certainly than the [PS5 and Xbox Series release]” he predicted.
Hogwarts Legacy was previously the best-selling game of February 2023, and remains the highest seller of the year so far. Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom will likely give it stiff competition, but with the current-gen and Switch releases it seems likely that Hogwarts Legacy will end up as the year’s biggest game. Of course, that popularity has been in direct opposition to the controversy surrounding Hogwarts Legacy and the author of the original Harry Potter books, J.K Rowling.
For those playing today, a new patch that includes a new arachnophobia mode and a variety of bug fixes is now available.

Ice hockey goes roguelikelike in this early access indie game
Arcadey ice hockey action slams into roguelikelike runs with Tape To Tape, out now in early access. Imagine ‘NHL 94 meets Hades’ and you have a vague sense. Across a run, you travel a strange land playing hockey matches and earning upgrades to boost your team with better stats and whole new abilities. It’s an interesting idea and quite a silly game, with a daft tone and some cheery ultraviolence.
Elite Dangerous reveals the mysteries of its Thargoid Maelstrom anomalies in next update
After being invaded by Thargoids at the end of last year, Elite Dangerous is now letting its players fight back in its next update. Update 15 introduces a new tool to help players finally get inside the mysterious Thargoid Maelstrom clouds that have been cropping up across the galaxy ever since the invasion began last November. However, there are also new enemy classes and Thargoid vessels to encounter, and one in particular – the Hunter-class Glaive – looks very nasty indeed.
Random: Pokémon Anime Shows What It Might Look Like Inside A Luxury Ball
Relax-ly like Quaxly.
For many of us, first laying eyes on a Poké Ball brought two thoughts immediately to mind: 1) I want one of those, and 2) what does it look like in there? While many will have spent varying amounts of time and money to achieve the former (not writing from personal experience, of course *ahem*), the new Pokémon Horizons anime might have just given us an idea of the latter.
The series is currently airing in Japan and is yet to be given a release date out West, that being said, Serebii webmaster @JoeMerrick has taken to Twitter to show one particular revelation from a recent episode which shows what the interior of a Luxury Ball might look like.
